The sciatic nerve is located in your spine with a neural system that extends down the back of your legs. If you are suffering from a "shooting" pain down your leg, this is called sciatica, and is usually caused by pressure on the main nerve by a spinal disc. Here is a site that explains sciatica:
http://www.spine-health.com/topics/cd/d_sciatica/sc01.html
Treatment for sciatica depends on the cause of the disc pressure. The most common is due to weakness in the back muscles and can be treated with exercise:
http://www.spine-health.com/topics/conserv/sciaex/sciaex01.html
But before you do anything, you should see an orthopedic doctor. Sciatica may have many causes including sports injury, and herniated disc which may need surgery to be corrected. Here is a good general site about sciatica and its treatments:

I hope this helps.

Hi Mike. I am a Paramedic student and I do so much lifting every day. My back often hurts and gets sore and tight, just recently my sciatic nerve. My bf convinced me to see his Chiropractor (which I never really believed in at all!) and he said that my back and sciatic nerve hurt not just cuz my back was out of alignment,. but my pelvis was too! he realigned everything, and I was sore the next day.But after that, I felt great!!! he said with regular visits my spine will be more aligned and the pain aleviated. He also suggested massage therapy to help with the supporting muscles in my back and neck. So that is my recommendation. Chiropractor and MT. It will really work!!

The sciatic nerve traverses the entire leg.. it splits at the calf of the leg.. should that nerve become inflamed it can be very painful but, you also will note, you may have a sharp stabbing pain in your lower back, if you happen to move the wrong way.. That is where the inflammatory process begins. The fastest way to find out what is causing it is to see a chiropractor.. he will treat the problem. It is a structural problem.

I was in car wreck several years ago and have problems with my sciatic nerve ever since. It runs down your spine ,hips and each leg into your feet. Mind has hit me about every place over m y body at different times, the first symtom is the tingling from hip to my knee and I take a muscle relaxer and it usually does not get any worse. If it does try heating pad and get some muscle relaxers to have on hand at all times. If it gets bad it will knock you out.

if you got rid of the nerve you may as well get rid of the leg also.

What you probably have is a place where that nerve is pinched either from a back problem or from bad posture or an uncomfortable chair.

As I recall the sciatic is the longest nerve in the body, runs from you tush to your ankle. You need it but it will take some time to stop hurting when it is damaged. So rest easy and get some pain meds.

If you mean the sciatic pain you can sit on a tennis ball. Put it on your butt cheek (the spot where your back pocket would be) and sit on a semi hard chair. It will relax your gluts and relieve the sciatic pain.

You can't get rid of the nerve. The pain it can cause can sometimes be helped by a doctor. Sometimes it heals with time. Although the nerve itself is not in your leg, the pain can go down your leg.
