i think it is because the primative part of our brain tells us that we need to protect ourselves from predators. by backing away from the open space when we are sleeping because we won't notic eif someon or something is sneaking up on us.

Hmmmm... for me, it is more convenient to have a nightstand next to the bed and against the wall than in the middle of the room where I can't plug in an alarm clock without an extension cord... and then the cord would get in the way...

I also have shelves on the wall that I can reach from in bed to grab a book, a phone, or whatever I have on the shelves that I might need.

because a room has 4 walls, and no matter which way you lay your head will be facing a wall.

we dont', if we sleep on our back then we face the ceiling. or if you always face a wall then perhaps you prefer to sleep on your side

I sleep any which way, at angles, across, or even legs and arms hanging off.
