Drinking milk and taking meds don't always work anyhow. Sometimes the underlying problem is how we eat. I can say this from my own experiences. I used to have severe and I mean severe heartburn, to the point I'd be waking up because I was hurting, choking and gagging on vomit. Twice I was put on medicine until I came to the realization it was me...yes me. I was eating way to much and too late at night. I discovered that when I would over eat I would have heart burn bad. When I would over eat and it was late at night, not only would I have heartburn I would have acid reflux too it was horrible. I love food, but I have learned that it will still be there and I need to eat only what I need and nothing more and not so late. I hope this helps.
P.S. I used to do the drink milk in the wee hours of the morning after being awakened but it never really helped.

Greasy and spicy foods actually have very little to do with it. Your stomach can take those quite well. Chronic heartburn is usually from acid reflux - stomach acid is getting past the little valve and into your esophagus.

The most immediate thing you can do is to stop drinking coffee and cola. Smoking is not good either, but that might be harder to stop. Don't over-eat. Don't lie down too soon after eating. Don't burp too much - this carries acid up with the burp.

If you don't address the problem, then your esophagus will get irritated over and over, and this can lead to a pre-cancerous condition called Barrett's Esophagus. That little valve will get irritated too - making it work even less efficiently. You need to stop the problem at the source. If the coffee and cola aren't the problem, then try other things - something is doing it. Think of it like a food allergy.

Drugs like Pepcid can reduce your stomach acid, but that should only be used for short periods. You need the stomach acid! It helps digest your food, and it can kill certain bacteria. Not enough stomach acid is a bad thing. You just need to stop it coming up into the esphagus.

If you get stomach or chest pain with the heartburn, it might be good to go to the doctor - there may be an ulcer too. Or your esophagus might be developing sore spots.
Unfortunately most doctors don't actually deal with these things well. They think in terms of drugs and surgery. You can probably track this down yourself and solve it.

Good luck.

I suffer horrible from heartburn and the foods that make it worse aren't what most people think. Processed foods are the worst and alot of the bad carbs.
I can't eat any types of gravey, foods with alot of sugar like bakery goods, packaged cookies, candy especially chocolate and of course spicey foods.
If I eat this stuff I will have heartburn for sure in about 30 minutes.

But you can make a mixture of apple cider vinegar 1/8 cup apple cider vinegar, honey to sweeten and water. Do this about a half an hour before you eat three times a day. Its suppose to balance your pH level

Heartburn is to much acid in your stomach and/or esophagus I have found just chewing a stick of gum helps almost every time. You have special glands in your mouth that work only when you chew and this special "spit" has a high content of some kind of base and it acts a just like baking soda and vinegar without the fizz. So less acid...less heartburn. But be careful I had a ulcer that started to bleed, I spent 2 weeks laying in a hospital bed, so if you problem doesn't go away or happens "all the time" please go see a Doctor

You should first find what is causing the heartburn. If you don't want to take medicines, then avoid the foods that give you the symptoms.
In general, foods to avoid include: alcohol, spicy food, chocolate, mint, hot food, coffee, acid foods such as orange juice.
