I am not making this up:
Went to the in-laws's today for my f-i-l's b-day. We ate spaghetti and sauce and meatballs. My bro-in-law and sis-in-law and I were wearing white shirts/tops. For some reason my mom-in-law has adult sized bibs she made herself. She gave one to my b-i-l (who's pushing 60) and my s-i-l (who's in her mid 50s). With all seriousness she asked me if I wanted one. I said, "I'm a bit old for a bib. I'll just eat neatly." It was really unnerving. Am I crazy or is this just not right? Btw, neither my sis or bro-in-law have any physical nor mental conditions that would cause them to throw food wildly.

debbi, I think it is different with lobster bibs. You're crackin' those suckers, juice is flyin' everywhere. I like to think there's more control with pasta and sauce.

Sounds like very interesting in-laws you must have. I come from an Italian family and none of us wear bibs. Maybe they are just very protective over their clothing.

BTW to answer your ? I would just eat neatly. A napkin would suffice me.

That's really more of a Psychology Question and how people view certain icons that have certain definitions attached to them.

The term "bib" is associated with infants that are unable to eat neatly and create a mess. The reason why it was invented was to keep clothes clean because the baby's coordination and ability to feed oneself is messy.

In this case, we're talking about the type of food that has tendency to be messy when consumed and isn't a reflection of the individual's lack of coordination. It's understood that most individuals that attempt to eat such food are susceptible to having food drip on them.

When men shave or trim their beards, they'll put a cloth around their neck, which is in essence, a "grooming bib." However, you don't see men getting self-conscious as to whether they'd be perceived as immature or an infant. It's understood that the procedure of hair removal they'll perform will be messy.

Adults wearing a bib would be along the same lines as men having concerns wearing pink because it's supposedly feminine symbol. Rather than compromise their masculinity, they'd shun the color from their wardrobe.

However, if you go back to the definitions assigned to colors, when did pink become a feminine color? Before the actual definition was prescribed by society, it was just a normal color like anything else. It's just that over time, people associated the color pink with sensitivity and feminine attributes.

When it comes to society, you can have Celebrities that can make things that were once "uncool" cool again. If P. Diddy chose to wear a bib and designed to give the bib a fancy name such as a "culinary maintenance cloth" or "CMC," people would copy it and no longer feel self-conscious about wearing a "bib." They'd wear "CMCs" because that's what wealthy people like P. Diddy wear.

60 years ago, you had women wearing purses. The idea of a male carrying around a "Manbag" was considered effeminate. However, men cheat with the definition to where it's acceptable to have a backpack or a fanny pack around the waist that is used to carry their own personal belongings so that they don't have to fumble around with their pockets.

Whether it's a backpack or a fanny pack, it still serves the same purpose as a purse. It's just been given a different name and strapped to a different part of the body rather than being slung on the shoulder like that of a female.

Do you know what a "Sports Bottle" with that closed spout is?

It's an Adult Baby Bottle.

That small spout is no different than a plastic nipple. The female nipple was designed to serve as a spout for breast milk that can control the flow so that the female doesn't lactate all over the place.

The design of a baby bottle is modeled after the female nipple, but the design and biological formation of the female breast was made to retain liquid and minimize waste and spilling.

The Sports Bottle follows the same Principles and you don't see anyone questioning the maturity of Sports Athletes sucking on a "plastic nipple" of a Sports Drink with a cool logo.

If people feel uncomfortable with adult bibs, they should probably avoid Sports Bottles as well.

I've already been through that stage in life where I used a bib so I would just eat very neatly. Maybe your mother-in-law has a pet peeve with people spilling food on themselves.

It depends if you plan on diving into your food...me, I'd eat neatly (civilized) but I had a step-dad (he was born in Italy) who had a fork with a crank on it (like an egg beater) and it made a mess so he wore a bib.

i would have taken the bib. its probably just me, but anytime i eat anything with red sauce, it ends up on my shirt. i dont throw food wildly, if theres a target, i will hit it. the expression on peoples faces when they are hit by food are priceless. spagetti sauce is self propelled, theres some kinda spontaineous combustion going on, and it really hates my clothing. never wear white.
