IF you are sending your letter from the USA to Ireland, it needs 84c in postage as long as it does not weigh more than one ounce. It does not matter how many stamps you use - they just have to add up to 84c or more. Putting extra postage on the letter will NOT make it go faster unless you choose one of the express delivery options that cost $24.25 or more. The usual delivery time would be 4-7 days, but sometimes things go through in only 2-3 days.
If you are mailing from Canada, India, the UK, New Zealand, or someplace else, I do not know the answer to your question.

That's grand, I just mailed two letters to Britain to the Royal Army Medical Corps. It cost me $1.70 in postage. I put six stamps on my first letter and five on the second. Be safe and put at least six on, that way it will take the postage well over $2.00. Most of British Letter Post and the Commowealth postage is similar, but don't take any chances. If your letter is returned, that will just be a waste of postage.

How long it takes to get to Ireland and how many stamps it takes depends on where you are sending it from.
