Actually, it's not the "role playing" that is exciting.
In fact, it's "acting out of character" that is the turn on.
Role playing is just the license to behave differently that you normally do.
Understanding that, it quickly becomes silly to put on that Zorro mask or the school girl outfit.
Character play is the key -- feigned reluctance, calling your partner by a nickname (missy, little girl, mister, daddy, madam, stud, boss) -- so that it's fun to give control or take control, direct or be directed and explore the things that might be mildly taboo in your moral or ethical stance on life.
Including the cop/prisoner or pirate/maiden in this context could be simply fun to do.
Being naughty is something we've been shamed at when we were children, exploring the mild taboo to enjoy just that is a lot of fun if you understand the appeal!

If you are married act as if you are having an affair go meet each other at a hotel and check in as Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Meet in the hotel lobby and look around a lot and make it obvious that you are hiding from your "spouse". Make sure the dude checking you out sees your wedding rings and talk in a loud whisper about hoping your spouse never finds out. You can pretend to pick one another up at a bar, blindfold your partner and play out your fantasies (as long as your partner is ok with it). Pretend one of you is a hooker being picked up by the other one. Just have fun and enjoy each other.
