It just started- I have over 80,000 miles on it-no problems till now. It upshifts hard in 1 and 2nd, then sometimes it doesn't shift again. Reason? Solution?

There is something called Dog clutch when you shift to 1st gear, the dog clutch will move to right to engage with the 1st gear and when you engage 2nd gear the Dog clutch will move to right to engage the 2nd gear with the drive. I think there is a problem in the dog clutch, it must have picked up some damage during sudden sifting or improper shifting.

If you have lost me, just ask your mechanic to check the dog clutch connecting the 1st and 2nd gear(there is only one dog clutch for both 1st &2nd gear).

have you ever had the transmission fluid changed/flushed? that would be the first thing i would do. you can get a flush for $100 or so. my wifes escape was shifting rough, and the flush made it work good as new...

I don't know, but had the exact same problem with my 2000 Focus.

My guess is that it could be either low on fluid or the solenoid pack has failed but it is only a guess.
