i dont want to get too attached to this guy i am "hanging out" with. basically i just want the upper hand, meaning that i have less invested in the relationship. what is the best way to show him im not that attached without being rude and pushing him away?

Either you're going to get attached or you're not..there is no in between sweetie...
You're trying to stay in the "safe zone" until you understand whether it's gonna work in your favor but honestly that's what dating is all about...you win some, you lose some...

just keep "hanging out" but only at your leisure. If he wants to get serious, and more of just a friendship, and let him know this right from that point on. Who knows, you may want to be closer as time goes on!

don't call him everyday. it shows ur interested. don't make plans very often either. but honestly the bESTTTTTTTTTT thing is to be honest and tell him u jes wanna be friends or u arent looking for a commitment (at the moment). good luck =]
