im an african american man and im plannin on growin my hair out. how many inches do i need?

You'd have to ask the stylist doing your hair. Someone who's more experienced and/or has more agile fingers may be able to do a bang up job with only 3" to work with while another braider would need twice as much.

Always consult with your chosen braider. Visit them in the salon and get a taste for their "chairside" manner. Are they attentive? Considerate?

These things are important as you need the braider to listen to you if the braids are being set too tight for your scalp.

Depends on the person who is going to do the braiding. I'd say at least 1/2 to an inch. Some people can do it with shorter hair it all depends. My girlfriend does her babies all the time.

About 3 solid inches, minimum, but about 5 would look the best

I would say go for 5+ inches bcuz when it gets braided u want some hang time, i think its ugly when the briads stop at the top of ure neck, grow it out so it reaches the bottom of ure neck
