My boyfriend's flight is being punished right now and he's not allowed to even open his mail, it just has to sit there. Is there a way to send him mail so that his drill instructors don't know he read it? His flight thought that maybe they could put an envelope inside of an envelope, but the inside one wouldn't be post-marked. I REALLY want to send him letters he can read without getting in trouble.

Your b/f obviously did something wrong. He's being punished for a reason. Trying to force mail to him will only get him in more trouble. When the punishment is over, he'll be able to read the mail that you've already sent. The Drill's know what their job is and do it well. You have to have confidence in them and their methods.

I wouldn't suggest forcing this issue. You'll only make the situation worse and it sounds as if he's already put himself in a bad enough place.

EDIT: Actually, Peg, his mail can be withheld as punishment. There's no tampering involved as long as he receives his mail before he leaves. There's no federal offense being committed. Sorry, but that's how it is.

I don't know about the Air Force. In the Marines, anything sent to recruits it given to the drill instructors for delivery. Short of sneaking on to the base and hand delivering something, there is no way around the drill instructors.

Sorry to say, those who say that mail cant be withheld are sorely mistaken. It can be, for a period of time, but must be given over eventually.
As a former Drill Instructor with 2 tours on Paris Island I advise you to leave him be for the time being. Don't make a bad thing worse.

there are rules that drill instructors/ drill sargents/ training instructors/whatever you call thems have to follow. they can not legally withhold mail. but they do. there are a lot of rules they arents supposed to break and they do all the time. and their commanders know they do it. its a out of sight out of mind thing. if no one outside the recruit squad see it no one cares.
i didnt know until i talked to a former drill instructor, during IT there are only a certain number of excersies you can do and only for a certain amount of time...its like 15 minutes at a time, we did jumping jacks for and hour and 45 minutes once...they could do it cause no one stopped them.
withholding mail is not allowed as a form of punishment...but im sure they will do it if they want to. but other then walking up to the comander of the training company and demanding a investigation nothing will happen.
im curious to know how you know he cant open his mail. is he writing to tell you this? or what?

Mail cannot be withheld no matter what the punishments are. It is Federal so they are entitled to their mail. The Drill Instructor can tell them that they can't open their mail but they can still open it. They need to call him on it and see what happens. If he's still adamant about it then the guys need to talk to the Padre and tell them their situaton..he will say something about it to their TI or their TI's commander and then they can have their mail!

I believe there is more to this story then you know. Even in the worse cases, the mail does not get tampered with. Even Military Prisoners and soldiers in confiment have mail call. When in doubt send it registered return receipt. But I think your being hosed with that story.

Be patient and keep sending those letters. Nothing short of graduation day from boot means more to a recruit. His punishment will not last forever and he'll have all those letters waiting on him. Encourage him to toe the line and it will be over soon.

Don't try to get one over on the drill instructors-they will find out, and when they do, not only will your boyfriend pay for it but everyone in his section will too. That will make the rest of his time sheer hell, and his new nickname will be buddyfu*ker. (If the Air Force is anything like the Army was!!)

You need to find a way to either contact his family or his recruiter to get his address. If he doesn't know your address, then he can't send you any letters to let you know his address. Remember to write PLENTY of letters, everyday.
