The problem here is that employers have such a choice of applicants that they will always probably go for the applicant with convictions because, and as you guessed, they consider it a 'safer' option. That is no reflection on you personally, its probably more of a paper exercise than anything else. And I suspect that there are many more applicants without convictions than with so that puts you at an immediate disadvantage. You didn't say what your conviction was for but if you were a category A conviction, then that will probably hang around your neck for ever, unfair though it may seem. The only thing that will take you forward is perseverance, patience and honesty! You have a life to live and you will be useful to the right employer. There are employers who will have taken on people in similar circs before and it is simply a question of finding those people and being given a chance. Perhaps the answer is to be totally self-employed. Even launch yourself into some dedicated self-employment using the 'new deal' scheme through JobcentrePlus. Maybe make an appointment to see a probation officer and ask for their valuable advice ... they are probably an excellent source of help and guidance as they deal with such things all the time. Expect the knockbacks ..... they are going to happen .....but remain focussed and positive about what you are good at and not what you did, probably as a silly young man, many years ago! Good luck ...

Are you just bragging, or were you asking a question?

If you're reformed and no longer a menace to society, good for you.

Just seen your additional. They're entitled to pick their choice of best man for the job. Its nothing to do with discrimination.

And we all know when job hunting, we all get the knock backs too.

The Act has so many exemptions that it's rarely worth the paper it's written on. If you want advice try NACRO (www.nacro.org.uk) or email me.
