I am not sure, but I laughed when I saw your question. I have two dogs, and they certainly think they are going to get lots of visitors!!

If this is a serious question - the dogs are simply protecting the house and you, which have become it's home and pack. Anything that may threaten either of those things, they will protect. When someone knocks on the door, and they know you are inside with them, they suspect it may be a threat.

The dogs trained staff(humans) are too slow getting to the door, and the dog, as a good host , inevitably does his job with pride. It seems the cat is too busy supervising the staff. : )

Dogs, bless them, are eternal optimists!! Every surprise, ever visit, every pat on the head, every good meal, every great nap... God made them all for them. :) You have to remember that most dogs have a mind that is the mental equivalent of a five year-old human child. Aren't they the same?

They are as excited as kids to find new visitors into the house each time. It feels great to be treated different from a stranger.

It can be natural instinct and curiosity that drives them to the source of the noise. They like to be in the know to feel secure.
