They say they didn't mean to but they broke its leg and tried not to let us know about it, so we couldn't get it to the vet and it died from it. Should I call the cops on his buddies or what? They're 15...

To that guy who said that dogs can't die from a broken leg..you're wrong kiddo.

If it were a hairline fracture then you would be right, but a compound fracture that exposes the marrow is deadly if left untreated.

I wouldn't think that this is something that would be easy to accomplish. The dog would not just lay still while its leg was being broken. So whatever your son is telling you is far from the truth. He should be punished severely.

How did you not notice that your dog was limping?? How did you not notice the swollen leg?? He would have been feverish a few hours after this happened if the broken leg was of a type to be deadly. Something about your story just doesn't make sense.

The first thing to keep in mind is that if you call the cops on his buddies, you are calling the cops on your son as well. However, this behavior is absolutely unacceptable and these kids need to be held accountable. Their cruelty and callousness should be punished. The bottom line is that they preferred seeing the dog in pain rather than owning up to their own behavior. More seriously, the abuse of the dog may be a very strong warning sign that these kids need behavioral help.

I would contact the other kids parents and discuss the situation and find out how exactly the dog's leg was broken. Each kid involved should be punished. Maybe your son could volunteer his weekends at a local animal shelter. Take away his Saturdays for a long time. Also, you may want to consider separating him from this group of friends. This is not the kind of peer pressure you want him involved with.

Good luck with a very difficult situation.

What do you mean call the cops on his buddies? Your son is just as responsible!! It sounds as if he needs some therapy as well as the other kids. Why could he not come directly to you? If he felt anything for this poor creature he would have let you know immediately. What were they doing that they broke the dogs leg? Fifteen is an age where he definitely knows right from wrong. Sounds to me like there is more going on than meets the eye. You need to call the police and talk to them. Your son needs to be included!!!!!

You're in trouble. Your son is irresponsible and cruel. You raised him though. I don't know what the best way to deal with it is. You could turn them in so that they learn they have to take responsibility for their actions, but on the other hand he should feel you're on his side so that he can trust you. Already the dog died because he didn't trust you enough to tell you. That shows there is a problem in your relationship. Why on earth wouldn't he tell you there was an accident? Do you abuse him physically? You've screwd things up. Better seek help from a psychologist, as a disfunctional family.

How long was the leg broken? Dog's don't die from a broken leg. I would talk to the parents of the other kids and tey to find a fitting punishment, like make them work off the cost of the dog, don't forget you son had as much to do with this as his friends(if not more then his friends!)

I guess I should have said a dog can die from a broken leg, it's a long painful death. You would have noticed the dog in pain! There must have been more damage done to the dog then that!

get them some help, even if you have to call the cops (at least that'll scare the beejeesus out of 'em). chances are if it looks like they broke the dogs leg on purpose, put the dog in danger of breaking its leg, or were doing something intentionally mean to the dog the call the cops and get them a shrink. accidents do happen, so if it looks like a genuine accident make them work to repay for the "damages" or earn back what they took away somehow.

That's terrible. I think you could make some trouble for your son's friends by filing a police report, or at least informing their parents of what they did. I don't know the details - how do you "accidentally" break a dog's leg? It's a really tough situation, and sad. My advice is to have a long talk with your son. Getting involved in a legal situation is a real pain on top of everything else.

How could they hide a dog with a broken leg? Did you not see the dog for several days?

You son and his friends need help.Cruelty to animals is a sign of antisocial behavior. Many murderers abused animals as children.
Please take your son for psychological treatment and notify the parents of the other children.

I would definitely call the cops if my kid and her buddies did something like that. They need to know that is unacceptable and it will teach them an important lesson. Do it as soon as possible. I'm sorry about your dog.
