You have my sincerest sympathy.
Let your boyfriend grieve. It's not easy to lose a pet, I know, and it's not easy to let that pet go. You need to keep being there for him and just listen to him. Don't try to force him to give up his grief or pain or tell him to "be a man" about it. He is actually hurting severely. Pushing him to give up his grief will only drive him away from you and drive him into despair. It might not show up right away but he will resent you for it.
He obviously loved his pet like he would have loved a child. I really feel for him. When he's ready, have him pick out another dog or puppy. It might take a little while or he might be ready in a short period of time. He will come to grips with this sooner or later and the best thing you can do for him is to let him cry.

A few years ago my cat of 13 years died. When I was at the vet I saw this on the wall.
It is called the Rainbow Bridge.
Just this side of heaven is a placed called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to the rainbow bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water, sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or mained are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them they left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in a joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together........
Tell your boyfriend to hang in there. It will take time but it will get better.

just let him blow off his steam, its fine. would you be crying if ur presicous baby died? i sure would! nothing can ever replace a loss, and thats a fact. if i had a dog that died, wut i would want other people to do is just don't ever mention it, and get me a new dog, but still having room for the loss that happened in my heart, never to be filled again. ;..-(
just talk it over and say all things die, and thats how life is. if he cries during this conversation, don't try to stop him. just rub his back, but don't do this all the time, which will make him cry more. after this conversation, don't ever mention the dog again, but get him a new one. it will break his heart cuz it will remind him of the loss he had, but he will be happy that he has a new companion.
hope i helped.

Sometimes the best way to get over a lost pet is to get a new one, make sure you tell him your not replacing the dog, your just getting a new friend to fill the void. He may not like the new dog at first, but he'll soon learn to love it!

Well first get rid of all the dog treats and other dog stuff.
Grief takes time; be there for him, he'll go through it for a while until it passes. Can't rush grief.

He has to go through the mourning process. It's not easy losing a animal you love. Just comfort him as much as you can. Listen when he needs to talk. Don't get another puppy right away. He needs time to grieve.

Don't talk about it yourself. If you freak, he might freak even more. If he brings it up maybe calmly say it's a good thing that the dog meant so much to him. I don't think it's all that worrisome that he's so upset. Give it time.

You poor thing! You have my sympathy because he is compassionate. Maybe another dog might work. He does not like change or being alone.

Give him time to heal thru the grief! It is hard when your dog passes away and you think of them as your baby.

He is grieving...talking helps a lot. Talk about "the good old times" with the dog.
