The bike part (I don't know what it's called) where the chain rotates is very spiky and jagged, and my right pant leg keeps getting caught in it and the material keeps getting frayed and shredded. I didn't have this problem on the bike I used last year, at all. So I'm inclined to blame my current bike. What should I do to resolve the problem?

Your pant leg is getting caught in the "sprocket" you can either get a chain guard...tuck your pant leg into your sock...roll up the pant leg...use a rubber band...tie a string around the end...best thing would be just get a chain guard from the bike store...some of those other things look a little silly

There are also velco type straps that keep your pants leg close against the shin. The less material flapping in the wind, the less likely it will get caught in the chain.

That part is called the crank, and it's ALWAYS jagged and spikey. Was the bike from last year a different size or style? Did you grow much from last year?

Shorts or elastic bands around the cuffs. Also biking pants are tight to the calves. During the 50s they were the style for shapely lasses. They were called "pedal pushers". Wonder why? The jagged thing is a sprocket.

Crazy: it is called sprocket the chain goes around the gear on the
housing back to main gear . Well dont wear loose clothing no
more because the pant cuffs will get in way while ridding a bike
or wear cut offs safer way

tie a string around the bottom of your pants leg, or use a rubber band. Or roll that pant leg up higher than the chain

A large rubber band helps! Place around your ankle, on top of your pant-leg. Some bike shops have pant clips, in chrome, they slide on and off and hold your pant leg in place.

Check it out!

:o)

I always just roll up my pants, it may look a little goofy but requires no special bands, pants, or any other fancy equipments. I also tuck my shoelaces into my shoes, since the laces also gets caught as well.
