I lived in a 1 bedroom 550 square foot apartment (51 square meters) with two large labrador retreivers. The key is plenty of exercise. I lived in walking distance of 2 dog parks, which we frequented on almost a daily basis. As long as they had sufficient exercise, they were mellow and not a problem in a such a small flat.

I wouldn't worry about the size of the dog as much as the dog's personality. There are huge dogs that don't need or want a lot of exercise. Conversely, there are small dogs that will bounce off the walls. Did you have a particular breed in mind?

Another option is to get a small dog that acts like a big dog. For example, the Boston Terrier.

I know that any dog needs to have a good daily exercise program even if it is small. That's a good long walk or run, not just a trip outside to eliminate twice a day.

Small breed dogs can be the most difficult to train and manage. Any dog that has to stay in a flat most of his life is not getting the proper care and understanding he needs.

So no, small is not necessarily better. With a larger dog the daily excercise needs to be more vigorous and can go on a longer time. If you like to run in the am or pm a big dog would love to accompany you. If you have a small dog a nice stroll in the cool of evening will be good for you both.

Def not, it depends on the dog. I'm a believer that if a dog lives in a flat it is almost definately guaranteed a walk which is more than some dogs who just get let out in the garden. Many larger dogs live very happily in flats such as greyhounds. As long as they get plenty of exercise most dogs thrive living in flats.

Dog in a small flat is not fair to the dog or the neighbours

Actually, NO dog is the only answer. Dogs need excercise and access to the outside. Get a budgie.

Small dogs are fine, but you could get a snake, Jackson chameleon, iguana, hamster, gerbil, guinea pig, a ferret, etc. If you want something that is small and playful I suggest a ferret. They are playful and funny, giving you many laughs and good conversations.

some small dogs need more exercise than some large dogs. my daughters jack russell has more energy than my staffordshire bull terrier! as long as the dog is taken out everyday and has acsess to a garden, it should be ok.
