BBC forum quoted: "The anger and violance shown over the Popes remarks just reinforces what he said!"

He might have said something wrong, but by protesting, the muslim religion is again seen on the news as being unstable and hostile. sometimes "the best response is no response at all"!!!!. but there is no "walk away gracefully" when it comes to religion.

Yet, we turn our back on those suffering everyday. we ignore famine, we ignore the things that happen to others just as long as we are given our place in paradise... if that is acceptable to all of you then carry on fighting over yourselves! is religion really going to give us peace? honestly?

I get upset when i see religion as the cause of such imense hurts. Why can't religion promote something positive in our lives? for all our sakes, before we destroy ourselves over nothing? but i fear its not going to change. there should be no term "holy war" in any religous vocabulary but that is how all things will end!

Holy War is at the top of my Oxy-moron list. It itself is an oxymoron, a self-deprecating contradiction, and the phrase is only uttered seriously by morons that contradict themselves.

Misinterpretation of mythology is the greatest hurdle human kind has to overcome. The sages and great spiritual teachers for thousands of years have been trying to get people to "get it." Even today, the messages are all over. From the "Wizard Of Oz" god figure being manipulated from a simple man behind a curtain, to the image of the Dragon in Chinese culture, and the indian goddess holding up one hand to say "it's OK, don't be afraid, it's all an act!"

When a religious text says "Jihad" or "Holy War," even the most elementary of scholars realize it's talking about the war between good and evil that rages within each of us constantly. Yet millions will opt out of the thoughtful answer, and reach for an explanation provided by some cleric who's been raised in a culture of hatred- an explanation that includes the de-humanization of all who are not a part of "our club," much like the Nazi propaganda reduced Jews to the level of vermin in order to justify the actions of extermination.

Let's face it. Religion has always been used by politicians to control large quantities of people. Constantine used it to stop civil war, which I think was the last time it was used with a good motive. Nowadays we have a bunch of wannabe Stalins that want to use it to sway the opinions of millions in order to get themselves a chair at the big poker game, And just like in any poker game, the only real target is the big chip holder. If you can take down the big chip holder, then everybody else might have a shot at being the winner.

It's too bad. Religion is a very effective tool to bring about positive life experiences and change. But like any tool in the shed, it also makes a great weapon.

Its not ALL religions that react like this. The Jews do not, and they get attacked all the time. Christianity used to but that was centuries ago. No, its just Islam that does it. Islam claims to be a peace loving religion. What a load of BS. There is something intrinsically wrong with the Islam of TODAY. Perhaps its because the religion has been hijacked by the jihadists or the followers are just too weak to do anything about it, but there is NO DOUBT that Islam TODAY is not a peace loving religion.

It would take very little research to find a multitude of positive things that the United Methodist Church is doing around the world in the arena of social justice. I'm sure this is also true of Baptists, Catholics, and other mainline Christian denominations.

Why can't religion promote something positive in our lives? is a poorly considered question by someone who was probably angry at that moment. Besides what do we want "religion" to do. It is the people in the congregations who have a chance to make a difference. Many are in the harvest fields working. Sadly, many are warming pews.

Well written question you are obviously above most religious people...

Maybe the purpose of the Popes comments was to create the reaction from those unstable effigy burning people...

If there is an assassination attempt on his life, when he goes to Constantinople (sorry Turkey), successful or not, all Hell will let be let loose.

Nobody on Earth will then be able to stop the forthcoming wrath and retribution from the Christian Fundamentalists.

Just sit back and enjoy the Show, there are going to be a lot of people killed...

The best religion is no religion. Religions are based on fairytales created by wise people way back wishing to scare the masses into behaving in a way that would be of best interset to them. However, there will always be vindictive sadistic types that will exploit the followers and brainwash them into fighting for a cause in the name of 'God' that is neither well behaved or acceptable but is beneficial to their selfish evil desires only.

You have summed it up very well. The sad thing is that the instigators of the individual religions appear to have set out to stop the aggression and hostility to fellow man. How things that set out to heal have reached the destructive divisions they have over the centuries one wonders. I am sure the likes of Mohamed, Jesus, Buddha and the others were learned people that listened to the arguments against there thinking and took it on board and made their judgements without prejudice.
