I'm not surprised. In Europe, passports are very necessary because all the countries are so small and close together, while in America most people have no need to go out of the country. (And you don't even need a passport to go into Canada or Mexico)

I believe it because a) most americans (not those posting q's and a's on this site) rarely, if ever leave the US and b) when they do leave they go to countries that don't require them i.e. carribean and canada.

Wouldn't surprise me. People don't travel out much due to growing anti-Americanism and their own closed-mindedness. I've had mine forever though!
