we emigrated to canada in january 2006, we tried to apply for credit for a car, and were refused due to "thousands of dollars worth of debt", we got reports which say our names are clear, but when we contacted equifax online, there is debt since 2000 - 2005, its not our debt, how do we clear our name and how long will it take.

Fill out dispute forms with all 3 agencies. (if it's on the other 2)
You can do it online thru them.

You must write a letter and be very specific about the creditor, and the amount owed along with the reason you are disputing the issue with each bureau that is reporting it. In the US each bureau has 45 days to resolve and fix the problem. You can also do this on line at each bureaus site.

you need to submit a letter to Equifax saying its not yours.. etc
they have to contact the bank ( problem business) in question and get a answer within 30 days proving it to be true or the problem is removed
