I wouldn't have an estimate to give you. I just find it odd you received answers from free to $1000. Best answer-call the courthouse. Shouldv'e started that way.

I don't know where you were, but to change your driver's license it usually cost the price of a replacement. Like 15 dollars. With proof of name change, ie Marriage license etc. To do credit cards simply call the company, may need to fax over proof again. But it doesn't cost anywhere near $300. Where were you?

It used to be around $250 to $300 here in Illinois, but that included a lawyer to help with all the documents that need to be changed and the court costs.
I'm sure it varies from state to state, but I don't think it's that expensive anywhere.

So long as it's not done for criminal reasons or to avoid taxes, I think you can just use the different name. But it does get confusing & if you do it officially, it may be easier.
I changed my middle name in 2004, when I became a US citizen it was free (as in - no additional cost over/above naturalization).

Nothing...
Just alot of paper work and patience...
It's ALOT easier if you have a recent marriage license when you apply for the name change.
