You look in a mirror, and let's say you part your hair on the right side. You look in the mirror, and your image has its hair parted on the left side, so the image is left-to-right mixed up. But it's not top-to-bottom mixed up, because the top of the head of the image is there at the top, and the feet are down at the bottom. The question is: how does the mirror know to get the left and right mixed up, but not the up and down?

Actually we see the image upside down on the retinas of our eyes. It's our brains that interpret the upside down image as right side up. The mirror image is a reflection of light and not any type of lens. So what you see is the light rays bouncing directly from the mirror into your eyes. If you used a convexed lens set at a focal point far enough away from your body the light rays cwill be seen as an inverted image. If you have an old film type camera, try opening it up and setting the exposure time to maximum and look at the image through the lens. You will actually see an inverted image.

The mirror 'sees' what a person standing opposite u would see. If the parting is on your right then it would be on their left...right?

if you turn your head sideways your parting is still on the wrong side. so it's to do with our eyes, not the mirror.
