I've actually given this one a lot of thought, and have seen both in practice. The most common reason for getting school uniforms is to make it so you can't tell the poor kids from the rich kids. It doesn't work. If the kid can only afford a couple of uniforms, they'll look shabby very fast. Then there are the shoes- you can always tell how much a shoe cost. There are always ways for people to express themselves. in a uniform, there are always loopholes. BUT- because of this, you can always tell who is well off and who isn't, so what's the point? Jeans and a t shirt are always semi-quasi in style, and are cheap.
People also think that school uniforms will take the kids' mind off of style so they can focus on their work more- they don't. If a kid has a mind to be preoccupied with their looks, there is always a way to do that. If the uniforms are hated, they're much more of a distraction than a help.
Basicazlly, throughout my teaching and academic experiences, I have found that uniforms and harsh dress codes do not actually fix the problems they were designed to resolve. People should just wear their own clothes. It's really less of a headache and one less thing to worry about.

When I was in high school, I though school uniform were stupid, but after growing up, there are many benefits. For one, there are cruel kids out there that tease other kids because they dont have the latest name brands. With everyone in uniform, that would clearly be eliminated. It also prepares the children for the world of work, since most jobs require you to be in uniform also/

I don't see them having a big impact. Uniform supporters say they make the learning place equal for poor and rich kids, but kids know who have money and who don't. You can't equalize small pieces of jewlery, and nice manicure, expensive shoes vs. payless, etc.
Proponents also say they take kids' minds off of sex. I doubt anything could do that, especially with the amount of Catholic school girl fantasies out there.
I wore a uniform thru middle school, and saw no benefit. My 3 year old is required to wear them at her preschool, and it seems so terrible to me...like trying to quelsh individuality and forcing conforment from the time they're barely out of the womb.
Plus, I was a chubby kid and had trouble getting uniforms to fit. It was really a pain and I don't support uniforms.

depends on the school. My school is out of control, girls wear stuff that are so gross and to tight, especially the bigger girls. So i think school uniforms would be good. The only problem is the cost, if their was so way that the school can pay for a couple outfits per student or something.

Uniforms would be good in the sense that everyone is equal in their choice of dress. Some parents can't afford alot of expensive tennis shoes and diffferent things.Plus, they may stay more focused on their work instead of gossiping about what Susie has or doesn't have.Especially the girls, dressed in things that are much to small and not in good taste for anything, much less school.

Uniforms are ok--i wore them from 6th grade til i graduated high school..they r intended to keep some sort of structure in the school and also prevent kids from portraying that they r better than others by the way they dress..it can help or it can hinder..

That's really not important. You have good results if you study. It doesn't matter wot you wear. Personally I am not against school uniform, but I can't say I love it either.

School uniform. Without one you richer people with good, fasionable clothes, and in contrast the less rich, less fashionable people, and it wouldn't make them feel good. With uniforms there isn't this problem so people wouldn't have to worry about their clothes at school and would be happier in the long run.

They is no way for both members to be happy. On one hand you have the student-who think they should be able to express themselves- and on the other you have the staff members-who don't want anyone to feel bad for the people that don't have the advantage of getting all the new things and having the nice clothes that other kids have so really there is no better way because either way one group will always feel bad.
