My dentist gave me an appointment with the oral surgeon to remove my wisdom tooth. Since he is on holiday... I´m having to wait for over 3 weeks. I´m taking antibiotics, started today, but my tooth is really painful cause it cracked and has a horrible cavity. Will it be ok to wait or should I go to another practice?

Thanks for your answers! I may add, I only have to take the antibiotics during 7 days.

I think you will be okay because you have antibiotics. I put off getting mine pulled because I was scared so it finally got infected and I had to get emergecny antibiotics. Made an appointment right away. I had to wait two weeks but the infection was gone by then. I still went and got it pulled and it was an easy experience. I suffered for nothing LOL! youll be fine since you have the antibiotics. Make sure you floss and brush and also use mouth wash. Keep your mouth clean especially while waiting for your appointment.

Since you have pains caused by the cavity it won't go away just by taking antibiotics, and anyway you are not supposed to take antibiotics for 3 weeks... If tooth ache is bad you should see a doctor just for this emergency case, and let the new doctor know that you have an appointment for extracting your wisdom tooth.

The antibiotics are to ward off possible abcess or infection of the tooth. If he was smart, he would have recommended or prescribed something for pain relief as well. No responsible practicioner will leave a patient to suffer in pain for such an unreasonable period of time.
If it weren't for the pain, you might be "OK" to wait a few weeks. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that if someone is in pain, it not only affects their overall comfort - but their eating habits, sleeping habits, and mood in general.
This dentist doesn't give a crap - time to find another one.

I would agree that 3 weeks is rather long to wait. Since you started antibiotics, the "ideal" timing would be from 7 to 10 days from the start of your prescription. Ask your dentist if he/she can suggest another oral surgeon for you.

I know you are in pain and your tooth hurts like hell, but you will live. My tooth broke half off and I had to wait 3 weeks to get it pulled. Taking the antibiotics first is a good thing. That way, infection will hopefully clear up before you have a gaping hole in your jaw. Just bear with it for a few more weeks, you will live.

I take more of a survivalist approach to health. I would probably wait, and in the mean time, keep my teeth brushed at least 2-3 times a day. If I sound crazy, maybe the pain is worse than I'm imagining, and you should call your dentist. I don't know how I could take anyone else's word other than my dentist, concerning this.

I had all 4 wisdom teeth surgically removed on a Friday afternoon. Friday night I had chipmunk cheeks and have trouble talking because my cheeks were swollen and my head was wrapped in an ice pack. By the time Monday rolled around (day 4), most of the swelling was gone. I'd say that by day 6, appearance-wise you will look back to your old-self.
