What would you do if there was a family member you really did not want to see, but, you knew that if you broke it off w/them you would feel guilty? What if the thought of seeing them made you very uncomfortable and almost sick? Would you rather feel the guilt or the uncomfortableness?

If you do not want to see someone and you have a very good reason. then do not. if you have to tell them why. This is not about guilt, this is about power. If some one can make you feel sick by their presence, they have power over you and you need to take back the power by you setting the will or will not of seeing them. Please see a councillor if this person has abused you in any way. You need to get back your soul.

Uncomfortableness...I have enough guilt over other issues in my life without having to feel guilty about family members too...

I don't talk with my biological father. Occasionally I see him at funerals and family get-togethers (once a year maybe), and I am polite but that's it. I will have a polite conversation with him if he initiates it, but I do not go out and seek one. I do live 400+ miles away which makes it easier. It's been this way for about 8 years. Maybe someday we'll be close again, but there are a lot of hard feelings. I hope everything works out for you. *I did feel guilty once. At my step-sisters wedding during the father-daughter dance. Wondered if maybe I should have invited my father to my own wedding...don't dwell on it now*

Guilt - it is obvious from your question that this relative has wronged you in some way. The guilt belongs with them -not you. Don't make yourself miserable to make this louse feel better. Poo on him. do it for you.

I HAD FIVE RELATIVES THAT DID ME WRONG, AFTER YEARS OF NOT DEALING WITH IT STRESSED ME SO THAT MY HEALTH SUFFERED.I SUGGEST THAT YOU SPEAK TO THIS PERSON HOW YOU FEEL AND WORK IT OUT.JUST GETTING IT OUT IN THE OPEN WILL MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER. I FEEL SOOOO MUCH BETTER BECAUSE I FOR-GAVE ALL FIVE. YOU PROBABLY FEEL BETTER AS TIME GOES BY AFTER YOU DO THIS.
