My daughters father and I are doing a paternity test. Since he lives in NY and I in NH, we are doing a by mail one through a company called GeneTree. How reliable are these tests. They reccomend that you send in the mothers DNA as well...how come?

They need the mothers DNA because they need to match your DNA to your daughter then whatever is left has to be matched to the fathers DNA cos she will get half from you and half from him. Gene tree is quite a reputable company, try not to worry. xx

I do not live in the United States and so i dont know about GeneTree.
There are many methods to analysing DNA. Some include isolating known parts of the genome which can be passed on. Others include testing for certain sequences.
Having the maternal DNA makes things easier, but it really isnt necesary.
If a company asks for the DNa of both parents, i would be suspicious because it may mean they are using cheaper test methods.
I hope the mailing process goes well. there is always a possibility DNa can be ruined or mishandled.

Well, to explain the "why" could go on for chapters. Suffice it to say so they can accurately map the child's DNA and have less guessing. If the DNA lab is accredited, it is very accurate. Since most of the actual "work" is done by machines, there is little possibility for human error.
