My policy is that the phone is for my convenience, not anyone else's. I answer it when I feel like it and if I don't, they can leave a message. A the message had better be what they called about, not just "call me." My time is valuable and people seeking "audience" need to respect that and be as nonintrusive as possible.

That said, if you have nothing to do with this guy and have nothing you can tell him or say to him, you don't have to answer the phone and you might even block his number if that feature is available to you. Or, next time he calls, tell him he's rude and shouldn't call you again. There's nothing you have to offer.

Cover your back; keep a log of these calls in case they start to be a nuisance. You can get the number blocked if it happens regularly.
If you have caller ID, ignore it. Get an answer phone and put it on before you go to bed.

Assuming you have caller ID and can determine that the call is not from someone who might be calling on you in an emergency, simply raise the receiver to stop the ringing and hang up immediately. That should get the message across pretty quickly.

1. Tell the people in your life not to call after and before certain hours, unless it's an emergency.

2. You need to get uninterrupted sleep to function well the next day.

3. Be polite and add your appreciation of their cooperation.

Get an answering machine and set it to "mute" and turn off the bell.

That or pick up the telephone and say, "Whoever is calling, I do not want to have to receive calls at ungodly hours!" and hang up and try to get back to sleep. If the person does it again, ask him, "WHAT exactly is it that you do not understand when I say that I do not want to answer telephones when I should be asleep?" Hang up. IF he does it again, yell at him, DO NOT CALL ME DURING HOURS THAT YOU KNOW I AM ASLEEP" or you can say, "Please do not call me ever again."

Answer, if it is something unimportant, kindly tell the person never to call from X hour to Y hour, unless it is something important. Then hang up.

shut all your phones off and let your voice mail take care of it. Or you could always change your phone number if this really becomes an issue.

Before you go to sleep, pull out the plug. Re-plug it when you get up.

OR turn down the volume to zero.

I pull my phone cord out before I go to bed. No way I'll be disturbed!
