This is my favorite frosting...All-purpose Buttercream
3 1/2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
1 cup butter, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (not imitation)
2 to 4 tablespoons cream
In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat the sugar, butter and vanilla extract on low speed. Add the cream a little at a time until mixture reaches a spreading consistency (should be smooth). Makes 3 cups frosting.
Note: if you do not have the electric mixer you can use a glass bowl and a hand mixer.
Also, you can jazz it up a bit by using amaretto liquor instead of vanilla. You can mix in a food coloring. You can also decorate with sugar crystals (white, colored or natural).

If you want a bakery frosting try this...
1 TSP Clear Vanilla Extract
2 TBSP Milk (or water, but milk tastes better)
1 C Crisco
1 TBSP Meringue Powder (you should be able to find this in the baking section)
1 lb. sifted confectioners sugar (about 4 cups)
(optional 1 TSP Butter extract and a pinch of salt)
Sift the sugar and meringue powder into a large mixing bowl, set aside. Cream the crisco, flavorings and milk. Gradually add sifted dry ingredients and mix on medium speed until all ingredients have been thoroughly mixed together. Blend an additional minute or so until creamy.
This is a medium consistancy, if you want a thicker one (a thick consistancy is generally for doing decorations, not the actual frosting of the cake), then just double everything. 2 ts vanilla, 4 tbsp milk, 2 c crisco, 2 tbsp meringue powder and 2 lb confec. sugar.
This is really good, but a warning, it's fairly sweet. And if you want to add different flavorings like chocolate, it's 3 ounces bittersweet chocolate (melted). And it helps too if you have an electric mixer (countertop style) as it can get a little stiff. Also you don't need the meringue powder, it's just so that if you put some in the fridge for later use and you mix it up again it'll help keep the consistancy. I didn't use it last time and the frosting still came out just fine.

frosting is just butter and powdered sugar
leave the butter out of the fridge for about 20 min and beat with a hand mixer or kitchen-aid. When it starts to smooth out add powdered sugar (sift if clumpy) Keep a little heavy cream around to tweek the consistancy. It will creep up the bowl sides so use a rubber spatula to work it back down to mix evenly

now a days it is not worth the time and effort to make your own icing it is just as good ready made just use a little camaflouge on your cake and make it look nice with a little decorating...get a good cherry icing and then put some cherries around it... or tube some chocolate around the sides of cake and fill that with cherry pie filling
