I don't!
Our country is a mess, with the middle class dropping into the ranks of the poor, Ford Motors is laying off 1/3 of their employees who the republicans will be complaining about soon, the rich get the tax cuts, people are starving to death, living under bridges, have no access to health care, while the head of Anthem gets 12 million a year, and are letting troops stay in Iraq to be used for target practice!

This isn't really a question. . .it's a jab at America and Americans. "We" certainly don't all agree with you or your assessments. This nation has its share of problems, but that's no different than anywhere else. And if you think it's bad here, maybe you should try another country.
A friend of mine is from Kenya, and two of his brothers were killed just for disagreeing with the political party of the time. Or you could go to Afghanistan, China, Iraq, or anywhere else that's known for crimes against humanity. Places where you criticize the government or the ruling religious group, and you disappear, never to be heard from again.
Then maybe you'd appreciate the freedom that you have in America.
Edit:
Sorry, Margaret, but your assumptions are all wrong. I am not retired: I am partially disabled, but I work for a living instead of getting government money. I drive an older car, and I have to make every penny work just as hard as anyone else does. My home isn't paid off and won't be for another 10 years.
What I am, however, is an American who values my freedom. I've got friends from other countries, as well as my friend from Kenya, and I've heard the horror stories about the friends and family members who've disappeared or been tortured because their religion or their politics were wrong.
I'll take my country any day, thanks.

As children you are brought up with a sense of patriotism and this attitude that has been cultivated for many years is quite hard to forfeit suddenly like that, even in the face of all the evidence that says otherwise. To your credit, many Americans can see the truth and are prepared to rebel against the government when the need calls for it.
However, American is not in a mess... you have your problems, just like any country but whether the rest of the world likes it or not, America has done many good things and in my opinon is still the beacon of proof for anybody that thinks that capitalism is best solution we have so far to help raise standards.

When the media tells you one thing over and over, you start to believe it, like it or not. The real war is inside your country. You're right, you are in a mess. The poor neighbourhoods, kids without supplies for a proper education, etc. It started with the media, only showing you one side of the story, and the channels you have are mostly americans. Therefore you don't learn about other cultures. So it is in part the government's fault for not wanting to teach you more. But nothing stops you from talking to people and to do a research about it yourself. Therefore the saying "ignorant americans".

Being german and living in the U.S. I see it very much. Americans are so ignorant of other peoples cultures that they tend to try to fix the others before they fix themselves. Which will always continue. It's the way the country was set up. Ask a french or Englander...they'll tell you the same

If you think you have the cures for the world's ills, then good luck. I'm an American and I certainly don't think that.
If by "we (americans)" you mean our government, well, what do you expect? Politicians all over the world are so vain and ignorant that they think they have all the answers.

Since America established itself as a world power at the beginning of the 1800's, our federal intelligence agencies have always wanted to "stick our thumbs into everybody's pie" to feel safe and secure. Too bad that many is the time this habit comes back to bite us in the @ss.

Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of choice, freedom to smoke, freedom to vote for whomever you choose. That is why Americans think that they have all the answers. We just can't seem to force it on other countries, look at what is happening in Iraq? Democracy won't work if it is forced!
