I am talking with a little girl on here that tells me she and her 10 brothers and sisters just lost their parents to a drunk driver about 10-12 days ago. I have offered to take them in and give them a loving home where they can all stay together. My question is this... has there been any mention of this on the local news, I don't know if she's telling me the truth and I'm very serious about taking them in. I live in the U.S and it would be very expensive for me to hire an attorney if she is not being truthful with me.

Be very, very skeptical of this. The Internet provides many opportunities for users and predators to exploit good-hearted people, for one thing. For another, you cannot just foster even one child informally, with no clearance from your social services/child welfare department.

Full and accurate information is essential before you proceed. If I were in your situation, I'd ask the "little girl" for the phone numbers of a priest or minister AND a social worker who can VERIFY her situation to you. I bet the discussion will stop right there.

Even if you get these references and they check out, I'd take the further step of calling the social services department, describing the scenario to them, and further making certain that the situation exists as described and that it is legally acceptable for you to involve yourself.

Caution is appropriate here - the human heart can be deceitful in the extreme, and the laws are complex and perilous to the unwary.

Plain common sense is also appropriate. You would not let an adult whom you basically didn't know at all move into your house on an unsupported claim of need, and unfortunately teenagers can be as criminal as adults...and children can be manipulated by malevolent adults to make overtures like this person has made to you.

Please take care.

Sounds fishy to me.... She has no grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins.... no relatives at all???? no godparents???

Do some investigation on your own on the accident (and not on Yahoo! Answers). Something like this would be a story that would be more than local news. If nothing else it would be a human interest story that some TV station would pick up... not just local news

If the girl can't give you specific details about where this took place, I wouldn't believe her. If she does, you can find something about it somewhere (TV channel website, for instance) to corroborate her story...

Above all, I wouldn't believe a little girl about anything she says unless there was an adult to corroborate it. Even then you shouldn't believe it without finding out if it's true...

If you are not a relative, you will need a lawyer to prove to all other relatives that you are best suited to raise these children even though you do not know them.

I am not so sure that this tragic story is as fishy sounding as somebody wanting to take in a total of 10 strangers. In todays day and age, that sounds like wanting to capitalize on the misfortune of others or somehow benefit themselves personally. I know there are good hearts out there but lets be serious, to take in 10? And from Yahoo Answers? Before you commit yourself with such a monumental task, try to think about the task you are wanting to take.

well if the 10 brothers and sisters arent old enough to be on there own or take care of each other, how old is this little girl and her family to be on a computer talking to you and where is she now. You need to find out alot more information on her and her family before you get in to deep. If nothing else get ahold of your local newspaper and see what they can come up with, they would have more contacts then you and would know who to talk to and who to ask to find out.

Without parents no income...no income...no electricity or Internet...
they may just be using your naivety and good heart to get money out of you, they could be pulling a prank. In England, they would not leave children alone in a home with no parents, believe me. They are trying to pull the wool over your eyes...especially if you have zero real proof. Get the address, notify t he local police or child welfare office, and report it. If it ios true, they will be helped, if it is not true, they will hear about, get embarassed....

Adoption is required before the U.S. will allow any child to emigrate. We just went through this. I hope the story is not true. Chances are, it's someone trying to get $$$ from you.
