You have as many as you can afford. Remember each attendant has to be given a special gift from the bride and groom. Your attendants also are included in the number of reception guests. I did not want a fight within all of my friends so I made my three sisters and my husband's sister my bridesmaids and my best-friend was my maid of honor. Now if you have two best friends or two sisters that are really close to you and you can't decide then you can have co-maid of honors then have a few more brides maids.

You don't need any, i only had a maid of Honor, you can have as many or as few as you want but it looks nicer if there is an equal amount of grooms men and brides maids. usually the larger the wedding the more brides maids

As many as you want (dare I say, within reason? You don't want to take attention away from the bride, after all!).
There is at least one witness each for both bride (and groom); the bride's "first" choice is the maid or (married) matron of honor. After that...
I've been to weddings with one bridesmaid. The biggest wedding party had four or five bridesmaids (each "matched" by an usher from the groom's side).

We didn't have bridesmaids or groomsmen - just a maid of honor and best man - worked out beautifully! But I've known people to have 17 people on EACH side in the wedding party. So you can go as big or small as you like.

You don't NEED any.

The only thing that's required is witnesses, and they can be the people who are in line to get married next, if it comes to it.

I had only one attendant. My daughter is now planning her wedding, and is looking at having two. I'm not quite sure where those other folks came up with the idea that "traditionally there are 3", as I have been to weddings of all different sizes. I don't know that tradition has anything to do with the number.

All the weddings I attended, the numbers were between 4 or 6.

However, I seen a wedding with 12 bridesmaids. Wow.
I also attended a wedding with 1 bridesmaid (her best friend).
My wedding is going to have none.

you can have as many as you want. But you do want to think about the cost of everything. I work in a floral shop and flowers are not cheap. The more brides maids the more flowers, gifts, and etc. If I were you I would think about prices too.

There is no tradition here and there is no magic number. However, most people have the same # brides maids as groomsmen. That is a good idea if you want them to walk down the isle together. If not you can have as many as you see fit. Remember no matter what anyone tells you it is YOUR day and your decision!

depends on whether or not you can afford to pay for their attire, flowers, etc. It gets pricy. Yes I know that the bridesmaid are supposed to pay for their own attire, but if the bride wants them in her wedding, I think it's appropriate for her to pay for their attire as well.
