We have cats now, and I don't dare have birds, but we had cocktiels when I was growing up. My mother got two and therefore I never had much luck training them. One actually died of leukemia - at least that's what the vet diagnosed.
I had another named Nick that talked me into buying him! I was looking for a parakeet for my boyfriend's girls, and I walked past this cockatiel high up in the store. I stopped to look at him because he'd squawked as I passed by. I talked to him. He "danced" for me & immediately suckered me in. Every time I tried to walk away he put on such a comotion, I'd go back to calm him down and he'd dance for me some more.
First thing I knew, I was buying birdseed, a cage, that silly cockatiel, toys and "whatever!"
He was great! :-) What a terrific companion. And he always DID sing & dance for me. :-) Could tell you lots more silly stories about him...

We have a very sweet, but high-maintenance Lutino Cockatiel named Lucy. We've had her 6 1/2 years, and she has moved with us 2 times. (Both times to other states). She can be very loving, but if she doesn't get her way, she throws little fits. She's pretty smart, we play hide and seek, she tells us when it's time for bed, and she also tells us when she wants a bath. Lucy enjoys watching TV with us in the evenings, and loves to read (more like chew) the newspaper in the mornings. I work at home, and sometimes she likes to hang out on my shoulder while I work. I think the funniest thing about her is that she doesn't believe she is a bird, she's thinks she's human....

She is a yellow pearl and tries as hard as she can to get louder then the sun conure but can't quite do it. She is an adventurist compared to the conure. The conure is bold an brave and rough where the tiel seems soft and sweet. The tiel lets me know when it is time to go to bed. She plays a little and tries hard to learn how to fly even when we clip her wings short.
I guess not much to tell you about her but she is a great bird for kids.

My Spike is the most wonderful little creature. He flies off his cage, and finds me whereever I am in the house. He bows his head down so I can pet him, and puts his little head on my cheek He loves to talk to my feet. He leans against them and sort of moans. As soon as I pick up my phone or phone book, he makes a little "dee, dee, dee" noise, 7 times, and sounds just like the phone sounds when I'm calling someone. He says goodbye when I pick up my purse. He is the most wonderful little bird. I love him so much!!!! And he loves me!!!!

Many books have been written on the subject. Can you narrow your question down?
