Well, I don't know exactly what you were told by Sylvia, but I've had several friends who have followed her methods and gotten good results from them.
Over my years of working with spirit guides and other people who are interested in communicating with them, I've found that there's a lot of variation as to what works best for people. There are a few things which seem to be fairly common with nearly everyone, however..
Probably the biggest thing is to be relaxed and calm. If you are tense, or if you have a lot on your mind, you're probably going to have a hard time focusing enough to "hear" what your guide says in your mind. The second thing is to have a place where you can get away from distractions.
The basic method is to sit quietly in a comfortable position. Calm yourself as much as you can, with deep, relaxed breathing. Then speak the name of your guide aloud.. For some reason, that seems to help when starting out. I personally recommend saying their name 3 times.. I've found it helps to "tune them in".. or rather, to both get their attention, and to focus your energy on their particular frequency. Then speak your questions, or concerns aloud to your guide.
Then just sit and wait for a response.
Odds are you won't "hear" anything like a voice in your ear... but with practice, you will notice a thought pop into your head in response. At first, it is very hard to tell whether that thought is yours or your guides... We're used to being the only source of thoughts inside our own head, so one thought usually feels just like all the rest. But with time, and practice, you will build up a stronger connection to your guide, and communication will become easier and clearer.
Many people have also found it helpful to attempt to contact their guides at the same time every day, in the same place. It seems that making a routine out of it helps them to calm themselves, and to get into the right mindset by habit. Some people need more ritual and habitual things than others, just as some people have an easier time getting in touch with their guides than others. But everyone *CAN* do it. Some people even use certain incenses or stones to help get them "in tune". I've heard from several people that gently holding a piece of Lapis Lazuli can be a benefit to increasing one's awareness of the "inner voice".
Your guide can hear you just fine when you speak to him. The problem is that most people aren't used to listening in the right way to hear their guides answer back. That part takes practice.
:Lastly, there are a few things to remember. Your guide is just that, a guide. He can give you advice, help you understand things, and sometimes even point out something you've overlooked, but he can't make decisions *for* you, and he can't solve your problems for you. That's your job. He also isn't allowed to supernaturally interfere with your life, even if he is capable of it. No, you can't get lottery numbers from him.
Also, the role of a guide is just like that of a friend. They need to be shown the same respect and love that you would show a friend. If you're only coming around to a friend when there's an emergency, or you're upset, or angry, or you need something from them, pretty soon they're going to start to resent you, and not like you. Guides are really rather patient, and understanding, but they have feelings too. So it is good to also talk to them and invite them to share in your joys and successes as well. They really appreciate that sort of thing.
My main advice, however, is to be patient, and stick with it. Sometimes it takes quite some time to learn to hear them. Remember to relax, and to calm yourself.. if you keep trying long enough, it *will* happen. Good luck :)
