there are two types you can go by:

Standing Game Martial Arts: Krav Maga is often considered a very extreme and vicious fighting art, Muai Thai is also a very vicious Kickboxing Martial Art, as well as Sambo.

Ground Game Martial Arts: Brazilian Juijitsu (especialy Gracie Jiujitsu), Combat Hapkido, Aikido are also very good for being extreme.

thos're just a few that might get you started. but there are more to find, doing a little research in your local area through the phone book or through a search engine may help you find more of what you're lookin for.

Looks like Dogpreacher is one of the only other experienced ones around here. BJJ is not the end-all be-all of martial arts. It is only one of many, and the practioner is the deciding factor, not the style. The better fighter always wins, regardless of style. The folks who claim their style is superior have usually never used it, never studied any other style to see how effective they are, and have not had an instructor who emphasied self-discipline and humility.

ALL of the martial arts are good, and how extreme you get is more personal choice than the style of martial art. You need to know what is available around you and take a look, talk with the instructors and take some free lessons. You have to find not only the style that interests you, but the instructor that you feel comfortable with, who is knowledgeable and respecful. Many places are just "black belt factories" so beware of long-term pay up front contracts, and places that promise a black belt in a year or such.

No matter what, YOU have to be interested in the art, regardless of what anyone else recommends.

It would be better if you gave even more information.

Are you looking for one that emphasizes competition and winning? So a sport like Judo, TKD, Ju Jitsu rather than an art like Wushu.

Do you want a martial arts that consists of kicking+punching or more grappling or both?

Visit all the schools in the area. Most instructors will give you at least one free class. Talk to him about your needs and his philosophy of martial arts. Then pick the one that will serve your needs well. No one can honestly tell you what is best for you. You need to decide that. Sorry but that's the truth.

I'm with the others that say brazilian jiu jitsu.

Don't waste your time, nor your money, learning some irrelevant martial art like karate or tae kwon do. As soon as you get knocked down in a fight, which you will, all your training is out the window.

This is why BJJ > all others

Try brazilian jujitsu. It is a mixed form of martial art, combining judo, wrestling, kick boxing. It's kicking butts on UFC and Pride mixed martial art competition
