My neighbor has a collie and it is very cute. However, everytime someone enters or leaves my hollow, she darts in and out in front of the car. It is now getting to the point where we almost hit her. How do we stop her from doing this???

Talk to your neighbor and request that they keep her contained. She needs to have a fence or be kept inside for her own safety. They could go with one of the underground electronic fences. Works great for our dogs.

It is the collie's natural instinct to herd fast moving animals. Since the dog doesn't get to chase sheep and is not trained NOT to chase cars, it really must be kept behind a fence for its own safety. If your neighbor wants to keep the dog alive, he'll protect it from itself. Perhaps he doesn't realize how many close calls the dog has had.

And just becasue YOU know to watch out for a brainless car-chasing Collie, doesn't mean that every person driving on your street is aware of the problem. Eventually SOMEONE will hit the dog and kill it or cripple it.

By the way, you might check into whether you have a leash law in your area. Perhaps a visit from animal control will help if the freindly neighborly approach doesn't work.

This is a major problem with a car chasing dog. Once they start, it's very difficult to break them of this habit. A squirting water gun may help. Also, the neighbor should do something to contain their dog, if he means anything at all to them. This is a crying out shame to let ones pet do this, and very annoying to friends and neighbors. Perhaps, people should get together on this and speak with the owner. Or, an anonymous letter in his mailbox, suggesting a fenced in area.

Unfortunately, you could be in a bit of trouble if you hit this dog - since she's not yours. Explain to the dog's owner that you fear injury, or worse to their dog and you'd like to get together on forming a solution to this problem. If you keep a calm dialogue, your neighbor will understand that you're looking out for his best interests and he'll probably start tending to his dog more often.
Good luck.

Tell her owners about it and let them know her life is in danger and that they should not let her run lose. Don't they have a fenced in yard to keep her in? Or they may have to keep her chained up if they are not willing to build a fence.
