A four cylinder is gonna save you on gas...a Honda is gonna get better gas mileage and be a lot more reliable...but the Honda is gonna be more expensive too, Chevy has no resale value and cavalier are one of the worst cars to own...you can realistically buy a Lancer '05 with 20k miles on it for around $10-11k but you didn't say how much you want to spend...also as a first time buyer your interest rate is gonna be higher that Lancer would cost you about $325 a month with about $1,000 down...but at least the Mitsubishi has a great warranty too 5yr/60,000 mile bumper to bumper which does transfer to you when buying used...

A 4 and 6 cylinder engines are exactly what they say they are... they have 4 or 6 cylinders. There are also 8, 10, and 12 cylinder engines. In general, more cylinders mean more power, but less gas efficiency. However, there are exceptions- some engines just have plain better engineering behind them, allowing them to get MORE power with less cylinders (like the VW GTI which gets 250hp, 32mpg highway vs. the VW Jetta which gets 200hp 30mpg highway).

the 4 cylinder is easier on gas.......the honda will probably last a lot longer tho

my honda gets 30 miles to the gallon (6 cylinder)
my sister's cavalier gets 36 (4 cylinder)

not a big difference

4 Cylinder engines are smaller than 6 cylinder engines, and typically provide better fuel economy.

For a college student like yourself, something small and reliable like a Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Scion xA or late model (2004+) Ford Focus would be the way to go. Depending on your budget you might also want to check out some ex-rental Chevrolet Malibus (around $11,000) or Ford Tauruses. (around $10,000) Those will have around 20,000-30,000 miles and be in excellent condition. (if you purchase from a place like CarMax)

A great place to begin your research would be http://www.edmunds.com, where the forums and reviews are excellent.

If you want to save gas and money, I prefer the Honda, 4 cyclinder they are powerful engines next to the V6. They are reliabel and durable. If you finish college, then you can buy something bigger. Good luck in searching for the right car.

I sell cars for a living. Go to Edmunds.com you'll get a lot of info on there.

HONDA, Toyota or Nissan are the best cars.
