The pope also quoted a 14th-century Byzantine emperor who said innovations introduced by the Prophet Mohammed were "evil and inhuman,,,
why quote what some person said 700 years ago.
if pope really wanted peace between christians and muslims,, then whats the need of quoting that ??? why not to quote what other non-muslims says about Muhammad pbuh.
"His readiness to undergo persecutions for his beliefs, the high moral character of the men who believed in him and looked up to him as leader, and the greatness of his ultimate achievement - all argue his fundamental integrity. To suppose Muhammad an impostor raises more problems than it solves. Moreover, none of the great figures of history is so poorly appreciated in the West as Muhammad." [W. Montgomery Watt, MOHAMMAD AT MECCA, Oxford, 1953, p. 52.]
"Muhammad was the soul of kindness, and his influence was felt and never forgotten by those around him." [Diwan Chand Sharma, The Prophets of the East, Calcutta 1935, p. l 22.]

or why not to quote ????
"He was Caesar and Pope in one; but he was Pope without Pope's pretensions, Caesar without the legions of Caesar without a standing army, without a bodyguard, without a palace, without a fixed revenue; if ever any man had the right to say that he ruled by the right divine, it was Mohammed, for he had all the power without its instruments and without its supports." [Bosworth Smith, MOHAMMAD AND MOHAMMADANISM, London, 1874, p. 92.]
There are so many people to quote... why zoomed upon 700 year old hatred quote?

Because what was relevant then is relevant now.
Islam has not changed in purpose. It has changed in the fact that the terrorists now use modern technology, which in the future, will be nuclear, to carry out their task of domination of the world.
Mohammedanism was a : that is the essential point to grasp before going any further. It began as a heresy, not as a new religion. It was not a pagan contrast with the Church; it was not an alien enemy. It was a perversion of Christian doctrine.
To base your entire life on error is something so devastating, that to admit it would go against 1,400 years of building it up. Islam's foundation is based on a mere man, a tarnished sinner just like you and me, susceptible to the passions and concupiscence of mortal men.
Christianity's foundation is based on the Son of God, fully God and fully man, in which was found no sin and therefore pure.

The Pope used the quote to illustrate that wars fought in the name of any religion are wrong. I think it's a bit rich for Muslims to point the finger at the Pope (who said nothing wrong) while calling for non-Muslims to be wiped out.

I think the Pope made a stupid mistake that shows how fallible he is as a human being. I think he will come to regret his words because Christians living in the Arab world will suffer the consequences. Churches will burn, you can be sure of that.
However, I think that there is a great paradox here: He basically said that Muhammed's islam has violent streaks. By reacting violently, Muslims will prove him right, in the eyes of many.

Taimur, thanks for condemning the violence that has resulted from the popes speech which included a quote about Islam.
I am continually impressed with the religion of Islam when I see all the Muslims condemn violence that other Muslims committ.
Your comments here is consistent with every muslim I have talked to or read about.

Everytime someone quotes the Bible, that person will be quoting a 2000-4000 year old comment. So if you don't allow quoting from ancient documents no religion is possible.

The writings of men are just not good reading whether it is books written in addition to the Bible or some old document from an emperor.
I'll stick with Jesus Christ who is Jehovah God in a visible body.

The pope was taking a cheap shot at the Orthodox faith by reminding it how Islam ended its state sponsorted empire in 1453.

You can take the Pope out of Germany, but you can not take the Germany out of the Pope.
Germans have long had something against Muslims, even before the rest of the world started to stereotype them as terrorists.
Germans think of Mulsims (especially ones from Turkey) like many Americans think of illegal immigrants from Mexico.
The Catholic Church misses John Paul II more and more everyday!!!
