Prioritize what features and type of media. Then at what price you are budgeted for the combination of features. My priorities were media type, DVD or MiniDV and then sound and then low light.
I like MiniDV because of the proven technology and the ability to be flexible with future editing. It also records at the high settings for an hour per tape. MiniDVD is for only 20min and you need another disc. Then I have also heard, not experienced, that the quality is very good but not as good as MiniDV.
Transferring to a DVD player standard is not a big deal, as I always like to check that I have recorded what I intended. Then use the DVD disc version as a backup in case something happens to my tapes.

Buy something famous like Sony
Pay extra, but have your mind relaxed
You can buy cheap, but end up in troubles
I look most for the resolution
Nothing else is important as long the resolution is great
I have a mini DV, is lovely
They say DVD's format are difficult to edit on PC
Hope you enjoy your new cam!!

If I was going to buy a new one (I have an older one) I would get one that records on a mini DVD. For me that is one of the most important things I would be looking for ... lots of video tapes to be converted to DVD is a real pain with the older machines..
