I currently have a 6 year old English Bulldog and a 2.5 year old daughter. My brother wants to buy me a Maltese as a gift but my husband says it's a mistake. He does not want to deal with the responsibility and everything else that comes with it.. Totally doggyfused.. HELP!!!!!!!

I'd be more worried about interaction between the Bulldog and the Maltese, rather than your daughter and the Maltese. The Bulldog could potentially harm the Maltese by simply trying to play with it. I've seen a Yellow Lab pick up a Maltese in its mouth because it thought it was a plaything. So, it could end up being a stressful thing...

A maltese is not a good choice to have with a young child. Small dogs tend to be fragile and nippy when startled. There's certainly no problem with having two dogs, or with getting a maltese once your child is 8 or so, but 2.5 is too young to have a small fragile dog.
I'd recommend a medium or large breed dog if you want a second.

I think that one dog is enough, especially if you have a young daughter. When she gets older and more independent, maybe, but for now two dogs and a little kid is going to be a lot of work. Especially if you get a puppy.
