we have 2 kids (9 and 3) and one on the way and we have 2 dogs... our 1st dog is part lab and part german shepard he is great with the kids... our other dog is my baby, he is full blooded english mastiff and he is extremely good with the kids, in my opinion that is the best kind of dog to get, but if you have a baby you'll have to be careful that the dog dont sit on it because they are VERY big dogs, ours is 10 1/2 months old and weighs over 150 pounds and when he stands on his back feet he is over 6 feet tall...but he is very lovable... no matter what kind of dog you decide to get you can go to http://puppydogweb.com/profiles.htm and it will tell you everything about the breed that you are interested in including how the dogs are with kids and other animals and they have all breeds listed..hope this helps ...good luck with your future puppy

When we had our first baby we already had a Border collie and everything was great until my son started crawling, this then made Kato the dog very jelous! He started marking his territory, like the crib and anything that my son used. So as sad as it was Kato is now on a farm. Then when my 2nd baby was 6 weeks old I saw an add for a 1year old Cocker spainel I went to see him and fell in love. Buster has been with us for 3 years and 1 more baby. Everythings going oo! My kids are currently 5, 3, 14months and #4 will be here in febuary. So I think it is best to have the baby first so the dog knows that they are a part of the family. I would wait until the baby's on a good routine(sleeping eating ect). I found it easyer to get a dog how was already house trained and good with kids.

Collies are the best with children. It doesn't matter who comes first, they will love the baby. Lab's are great, so are German Shepherds. There are some breeds that should not be trusted, especially as the baby gets older and may do things (unintended) to a dog, and the seemingly docile dog will defend himself. Check out breeds you are thinking about very closely, before making such a major decision. I have never seen or heard of the first three above, ever doing anything to hurt a child.

Labrador Retriever - great with kids. Had boy first then Lab when he was 4 years old. These make great pets for people with children.
Any puppy will nip so be careful. A nip to an adult is like a bite to a child. Also, dogs like Labs or Goldens get to be 70 pounds or more and they can bowl over an adult if they hit one on the run. Never leave a child unattended with a dog; any dog.

One kid on the way, 2 dogs who have already claimed the house as their own. One is a mutt (70lb German Shephard-Chow mix) and the other is a Shih Tzu. I am more worried about my shih tzu than the big dog. She is pretty old and blind.... can be kinda cranky too. She is my baby though, and I will keep her until the very end. My mutt is the biggest lap baby you will ever meet. She loves everyone, and have never been nasty to anyone in our family. She is very protective as well, but an absolute doll. Sleeps in the bed and gets her feeling hurt when she cannot cuddle. Am not worried in the least.

English Bulldog, had the dog 4 years before my baby girl. The English Bulldog is a great breed for kids. They are extremely calm and loving.. My daughter is 2.5 years old and absolutely loves our dog... No concerns whatsoever... :-)

Before my son was born, I had 2 Rottweilers..no problems when the baby came along.
The one Rottie passed a few years back, and now I still have the other Rottie (17 yrs) as well as a Dachshund and Standard Poodle (the big Poodles) and I have another baby (human baby) on the way.

Like potato said, German Shepards are great with kids. Also, I got a Boxer last year and tho I don't have my own kids, I have friends with kids over all the time and the neighborhood kids came over every day to play with him. Boxers are a very, very protective and loyal breed. He seemed to sense, though, when he was around someone he needed to be gentler with, either children or an older person.... he would never be as rough with them as he was with me or my husband when playing. He was VERY protective of an 8 year old girl he saw with every day. He would stand between her and anyone coming in the yard until he saw it was okay.

Doberman, i had a doberman that was aging before the baby was born but unfortunatly died before birth. I wanted a dobie so much but with my sisters a new born in the house i didn't want the pressure of a puppy and baby. I now have a 6 months old dobie and a 3 year old niece living together who adore each other. good match evn though he towers over her at least i'll no she is safe.

my parents had dogs before i was born and had an american cocker spaniel puppy when i was born. it was fine with me but got jealous when my sister was born and got very unpredictable, eventually having to be re homed because of it. if you really want a dog before children i would suggest going for an older rescue as it would be less demanding of your attention and mature enough to either consider it's actions to an extent or take on a maternal or protective role to the child rather than working against the baby.
