King Charles Spaniel. They're smart, friendly, furry, and pretty. Mine also gets along with cats and is very patient with children. The only downfall is that they're expensive but really Cocker and Springer Spaniels are great, too and generally cost a lot less.

Miniature schnauzer
I have never come across one that isn't friendly and loving.
Also, I forget what type of terrier it is, but the type that "TOTO" was in the wizard of Oz. That is an awesome family dog.
