Good question. Until peaceful islams, in large numbers, start to openly condemn these violent actions, people will believe that islam = violence.
Why do these "branches" of islam hate westerners so much? I read a report recently that the hatred is really jealousy that stems from bin laden's ego--when he offered his "protection" during the Gulf War, he was turned down, and the US was selected instead.

This article helps explain things. scroll down to:
The Islamic Question
by Roberto A.M. Bertacchini and Piersandro Vanzan S.I.
In essence, the authors feel that there is no "moderate" Islam, because the incarnation of Islam that currently exists allows for no accomodation, and no negotiation. The adherents of Islam feel that they are right, period, and that all that is not Islam must be made into Islam, and failing that, be destroyed.
"For the zealots, everything that comes from the outside is like poison to their traditional ways of life, so they hold that there is only one way to avert cultural catastrophe: expel the invader and hermetically seal off the borders, so nothing can pollute or corrupt their miniature world. This is, in part, the position of Osama Bin Laden, who is opposed to the American presence, not only in Iraq, but also in Saudi Arabia.
But this defensive program would never work against Western civilization. Unlike all previous civilizations, it is not localized or territorially circumscribed. The pervasiveness of the global village is such that there is only one way to escape its grasp: destroy it. And this is Al-Zawahiri’s ideological program, which he pursues with a complex strategy. For the formula of “modernizing Islam,” he substitutes another: “Islamizing modernity,” and therefore the West.
Within the Muslim world, Islamization means de-Westernizing everything: from political and cultural institutions to economic ones, even to the point of rethinking banking operations. On the outside, it means spreading Islam through vigorous missionary activity, in both Europe and the United States: this activity is supported above all by Saudia Arabia. But according to the most radical interpretations, Islamizing the West means violently attacking its political and economic power, without sparing the civilian population."
"In short, the Islamization of the West is neither a phantasm nor merely something feared: it is an intention and a fact that emerges from an objective examination of the evidence.
Moderate Islam, properly so called, does not exist because there is no institutional and moderate form of Islamic theology. There are moderate Muslims, and some of them see things with a clear and long-term perspective. But Islam itself, or rather the institutional religious culture of the Muslims, has reacted in its encounter with modernity by entrenching itself in fundamentalist positions."

I am also wondering like you. This is the 21st century and I don't know why there are still a lot of stupidity. There in front of your eyes you see a crocodile and you call it a lizard, and when you see a missile, you mistake it for a banana. Oh, you christians, your stupidity will cost you your lives and somebody throws sh*t on your face and you still do not know who did it. Poor you.
Do you see someone calling you kafirs? Do you know what it means? It means "infidels" and what do they do to infidels? Have anyone of you really realized why they keep on calling nonmuslims as kafirs? They are waiting for the world to be islamized and they are not going to do it with a big smile. They are just looking for the right moment and the right reason, that's why they never run out of reason to point the blame on even a comment like that.
If Muslims say that Jesus is not divinity and is only a prophet, is that not blasphemy against christianity? Is that not a lie on our religious belief? Is that not going against our faith? If so, are we also justified to declare Jihad for that reason? Go out on the street and condemn Islam for that reason. Why is christianity always on the wrong side of the fence? Is it because we are a forgiving followers of God? And that no one fear us because we are told to forgive and not terrorize or can easily declare jihad? What if there would arise christian defenders who will enflame trhe hearts of christian like what their leaders are doing?
Can you still not see how easy it is for them to call us kafirs, cows, pigs, dogs, apes etc. and there are christians who still think otherwise. They believe that and it is only time that peace will remain that way and they will never stop. A comment cannot kill them, but being a kafir, you are as good as dead. And don't tell me that I am wrong, tell your troublesome brothers and sister that they are, tell your radicals that they are, tell the extremists that they are and not us if you really belong to what you call a religion of peace. But I doubt you can do that. because right or wrong you will always defend Islam no matter what.
and to add something regarding the attack on churches. Before that happened, after the news broke out as reported by media, I already knew what reaction to expect and I was not mistaken. There are peaceful muslims, alright, but there are a lot more violent ones. You know why I said this? It's because instead of these so called moderates to teach their stupid brothers and sisters being the schooled ones, most of them react to such comment like something has been shoven into their *sses that they can not help but to become restless. So, what can we expect the ignorant muslims will do especially the radicals? Wouldn't you expect a bomb or a molotov cocktail at the least on church doors and premises?

it really is how Islam has spread contained in the previous. in the experience that they have got an income , they loot and plunder even as screaming verses from the Quran justifying their movements. once the chips are down and they initiate getting whacked, the peace finished Muslims who're silent till eventually then, pop out of the timber works claiming ,the non Muslims have twisted the authentic Islam and easily a really microscopic baddies are giving Islam a nasty call. they proceed to be silent even as they are wining with a view to income on the loot. they have performed this double sport theory out history and easily of previous due their frame of mind has been uncovered contained in the west as a results of significantly better and swifter communications.

I know where you are coming from, just as there are branches of Christianity, you think there could be branches of Islam as well. I think there are many Muslims who are against the implementation of Sharia law, which to other religions or societies, reflects a repressive, inhumane, and intolerant faction of the Islamic religion.
I guess in some ways similar to the Bible bashers in the US, who tend to shove religion down your throat.
I'm against anyone shoving religion down my throat, because i believe that religion should come from your heart, and the person you are is reflected by what is in your heart, and so makes no difference what religion you belong to, or not.

The only ones who can stop Islamic violence is Islam, and they obviously have no intention of even attempting to stop it. Muslims are on here all the time telling us how prejudiced we are against them, yet they do absolutely nothing to stop the senseless violence. If christians ran around burning and destroying churches, blowing innoent people up, etc., you can bet we'd be stopping it. It's just like the cartoon thing, they'll basically kill over any insult to their religion, even if it happens to be true, whereas we're insulted everyday, yet don't feel the need to kill anyone over it. It all comes down to the "thou shalt not murder" commandment, apparently in Islam, that only applies as to killing other muslims, everyone else is fair game.
Cassandra, you're way off. Hitler didn't say he acting in the name of God, he said he was acting for the nation of Germany. Germany and God are not the same.

Its simple to say that the Muslism are bad, the suicide bombings show that.
However, the Christian Evangelical Right, although not bombing themselves up, are violent in a different way. Supporting Israel in every war it partakes and the like.
Also, Christian groups are incredibly violent in several parts of the world. The Lords Resistance in Uganda, a fundamental Christian army, is repsonsible for a genocide that has shocked the world. The Fundamental Jews believe in the eradication of Islam, and the return of the Holy Land and the like..
Frankly, i see all Religion as Bad. It all just leads to death and misery.

White/Black Yin/Yang Right-wing/Left-wing Hawk/Dove There are extremists everywhere, in everyhting. Even religeons sometimes get "spin-offs" because people within the religeon see/interpret things differently. Islam is a peaceful religeon, if it is looked upon the way it was written to be looked upon and understood.

If I judged Christians by their actions....then Christianity would be nothing more than a group of child murderes who bomb hospitals while dressed as clowns...(John Wayne Gacy was a Christian)
