Last week, i had a patient with an infected wisdom tooth, it was about to obstruct his airway....We had to emergently intubate him.

Bad buccal hygiene, so can any kind of teeth infection. can lead to endocarditis also, that is a heart infection. How bad is that!!!

First, the tooth goes dead and you feel no more pain. After having a lot and then no more is bad, because the tooth is being eatin away by decay. Because of this your tooth becomes very soft and crumbles away. If this happens and you don't get the tooth extracted (which will become very difficult and painful afterward) the gums can grow over the decayed root traping the roots underneath AND the infection. Once this happens and you still don't get an extraction (called Root Removel Surgery, which some General Dentist choose not to do if too difficult, and can cost you 4x if you go to an oral surgeon because the use General Anesthesea which puts you to sleep and that in itself costs the most) the infection will spread through the nerve that travels along your jaw infecting other teeth along the way, destroying them, THEN the infection gets in the blood stream which can kill you. An abcess can be treated with and antibiotic which can cost you as little as $5 for simple penicillin and $25 for something to replace penicillin if you are alergic. Then you need a RCT if your tooth is still intact, or and extraction. Better that dieing right?

The worst case scenario is that you die. The infection can spread into your blood stream, and at that point, it can cause sepsis (a severe blood infection that, left untreated can send you into shock and could possibly die.), or cause you to grow what doctors call "vegitation" (think dirty fish tank floaties) which can cause you to have a heart attack, have a stroke, clog a vein in the lungs and make you die, or clog a vein in a hand or foot and you loose toes, fingers, etc. If you do not have insurance, you can go to the ER (emergency room) or urgent care center and either they can take care of it, or set you up with the resources so that it can be. An abscess tooth is a serious thing.

tooth abscess untreated damage

If you let this infection go on untreated it can lead to sepsis, which is an infection in your blood system, which in turn can lead to death. Go see a dentist ASAP and then get on an antibiotic to help fight your cause of infection in the first place.. Take care of your teeth , you only get one body so take care of it as well. Good luck....

we admitted a patient to the hospital last night for an untreated dental abcess that had now become a major infection. She is receiving iv antiobiotics and will have surgery Monday to attempt to drain the region.
It is not fun to have something like this!
