How can I keep people from watching this filth so they don't go to hell

If indeed your pastor told you this, he did not speak the truth. That would only be true if we still lived under the yolk of the Old Testament Law and not under grace (which has been extended to those past, present, and future through the blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ).

It is true, however, that God wants us to "renew" our minds and focus on "worthy" things.

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things." (Philippians 4:8)

Sounds like your pastor might be a smidgen cracked--is this a Southern Baptist Church?
Tell you the truth, I believe the adjuration against cursing had lots more to do with abusing or degrading ones fellows than it did with socially unacceptable words. That presupposes, of course, that such 'cursing' is not merely telling the truth, but saying anything with the goal of damaging someone else's faith or confidence. As usual, the term has been corrupted over the years, mostly through sanctimony and ignorance.
Realistically, watching current day television will corrupt you for a lot more reasons than mere cursing--like the sleazy social behavior which it presents as purely natural and entirely acceptable, if not outright desirable. And, while it's admirable of you to concern yourself with all those people who watch such shows, it is yourself on whom you should focus your energies. They will, or will not, based on many more factors than the type of television they watch, and the best thing you can do to change their outlook, is to set a good example. Without being either judgmental or sanctimonious. Nothing turns off the untaught and unrepentant more effectively than the display of consequential rectitude.

There is little Bible evdence I can think of that supports such a ridiculous claim. Ask him for religious evidence. If it is just a swear word, then his claim is unlikely. But if the swearword demotes the name of the Lord God into a common swear word, then that is against the Commandment wich says that you should not take the name of the Lord God in vain. Then there is Biblical backup.
The easiest way to avoid swearing on TV is to either stick to the programmes you know don't use swearing, or to watch religious channels, which have no swearing in them in accordance with the Bible. Encourage others to do the same.

Your kidding right? All of TV is like that. Just worry about being a light in the darkness of this world. Help people find positive things to do and say, that further the kingdom. Don't get all hung up on the "don't's". Bring light. Take ground for Jesus Christ and hold it for the kingdom. Go forth in great confidence. That you are a child of the great king.

Your pastor is wrong. It is not watching TV that has swearing in it that condemns a soul, it is not knowing Jesus Christ as one's Lord and Savior. Personally, I find it offensive to listen to that sort of thing and I turn it off when it comes on. If the holy spirit lives in you, which it does in any born again Christian, it convicts us when we are doing things that are not Godly. And listening to that sort of language, or watching filth, is not Godly. It doesn't condemn a person to Hell at all....but it does muddy up one's spirit.

I think your pastor is wrong! Can he back this up with biblical evidence? There are many false prophets out there! Just be careful! Read the word of God, and decide for yourself, and with the help of the Holy Spirit, what the bible teaches. If your pastor regularly gives his opinion, and not God's, I suggest you find another church!

I threw the devilvision out of my house. I have not owned one in ten years. Works great for me. I personally believe that watching any television show will have the same result. A saint of God cannot mix with the spirit of Hollywood.

Be serious. No one is going to go to hell because they watch TV or movies with curse words in them. Your pastor is a fanatic.

Alex, please ask your pastor what he means by hell. The Bible hell is for non-existance, unlike what some churches teach as a place of firey torment. If your pastor is teaching souls that burn forever in a place ruled by Satan, you might remind him that lying is a sin and no liars will inherit God's kingdom. Then, spend some time getting to know your Bible for yourself.
