they like how the fish tastes, and not all cats are "scared" of water, mine one swims everyday in a pond nearby, the ones that are "scared" just don't like how it feels 2 b in water perhaps, or maybe it's b'cuz of the temperature of it.

I don't know...but my cat loves water. He is fascinated by it. I have to put a stool ladder next to the sink so he can watch me wash dishes. He also has a bench in front of the aquarium so he can try and "catch" the fish.
It is possible that the light and movement fascinate the cat and that the cat has no real idea that the fish are in water.

Cats were taken by early traders on ships from their original home in the north African desert for their ability to get the rats that also wanted to travel on the ships.
The men ate fish that they caught and shared them with the cats. Cats being carnivores liked fish. They lived on the shores of the Mediterranean too and didn't have to "fish" for these treats, they could just scavenge from the fishermen's catch.
I have a calendar called "Cats in the Sun". The photos were taken in Greece I think along the Mediterranean. Last month there was a picture of a young cat with a large fish in its mouth. I imagine he has just snuck it away from an inattentive human.

Because that's what cats like! I live by a stream and one of my cats goes fishing. She's brought back small eels and, once, a brown trout.
She brings them in and puts them by her food bowl.

When rationing came along cat food manufacturers had to find a substitute for meat. Any puss would risk getting a wet paw for a free snack.

Mine seem to hate getting wet - they run in when it rains, yet one of them brought a neighbour's goldfish home from his garden pond one day. Another time I caught the same one with a frog in his mouth. I think they just like to keep us on our toes!
