Today, most computers are sold without programs installed. When buying a new computer you will have to budget to include the cost of any programs including Microsoft Word which comes included with Microsoft Office, around £70 I think.
You can sometimes pick up older versions of Office, If your not to worried about having all the latest features. Try eBay, I have seen great deals on software.
Having said all that some stores like Argos etc are offering bundled packages, so look them up and compare prices.

Contrary to lots of answers already given, lots of new computers come with Microsoft Works pre installed, Word is part of works, although I understand it is not the all singing dancing version you get if you purchase office.
If you can buy office for £70 get it, you won't even get the student version for that!!

None. Unless its a special deal with microsoft office installed (and that will be built into the price of the computer). no matter how you get it you'll have to pay something along the way.

Microsoft Word is a pay-off piece of software. It is not free.
Try this as an alternative,
