Kids will always find a way around "parental controls" if they want to.

My mother opened all of my mail and she checked my room every week even though I'd never done anything against the rules. She even read my poems and diary. It made me angry and rebellious and I decided I wouldn't do that to my kids.

In our house, my boys have our trust and they've never abused it. My oldest is 19 and living away from home now and my youngest is 14 and they're both amazing kids. They deserve our trust and we deserve to have kids who are trustworthy.

We do have rules... the youngest has to let me know where he is and who he's with. Our computer is in the living room with the monitor pointing into the room but everyone (even me) has the same lack of privacy on it.

I think that over monitoring for no reason can make people sneaky and angry. My rule is, if I wouldn't like someone to do it to me, I don't do it to them and that includes my kids.

Dear Lil Miss,

Kids have never had the freedom you describe. It is only now, in an age where kids have more access to things to which no sane parents wishes their children to be exposed that such controls are necessary.

And obviously, some kids need more control than others. Some kid's dispositions will naturally keep them from evil, others may have a natural curiousity or desire or earlier physical maturity which may require more control.

And of course, as in all times, parents themselves are a factor. Some just don't care that their children smoke, sleep around, get pregnant, totally fail morally or spiritually, or what have you...

Trust in your child has to be based on the certainty that he/she will not use granted freedoms for things a parent would disapprove of if they found out. If a parent can't be certain of this, then the SAFEST choice for the child is censorship/control.

How many kids have been led into harm with with ideas like "What's the harm in that?" or "Who's gotta know?"

Too much freedom is not good , Kids theses days have gone crazy, they abuse their freedom, don't have any respect anymore. A child should have to earn the right to be trusted . if you mess up then take your medicine.
