This probably happens all the time. I don't think it's rude unless it's a family member that you should know.

Most people understand that if it has been many years since seeing one another, the name game comes up (like at high school reunions). I recognized the faces, but couldn't remember the names. Thank goodness for the name tags!

You could also say, "I am sorry, it's been so long. You look very familiar to me and I don't remember your name. My name is ....."

If they say they don't remember you, just say "I am sorry to have bothered you." and walk on. :)

It's probably rude to come up and say "Why, hello XXXX ! I haven't seen you in years!" and go on talking only to find out it's not XXX and, in reality this is a stranger!

I think it's quite appropriate, especially if you are certain it is the person you are thinking of. If it's someone you're not sure about, it might be better to say "You look so familiar, did you ever go to . . . .? " However, I don't think anyone would be offended at either remark. It also shows some humility on your part if you're not presuming that everyone will always remember you.

No, I say that to people all the time and they say it to me...it's usually followed by,"Of course I remember you!" but it sometimes feels weird to come up and start talking to someone like no time has passed when you haven't seen them in ages.

It is best to just introduce yourself and say when you knew them, rather than putting someone on the spot and assuming they remember you or asking them if they do.

I would not think it would be considered rude. Just asking an honest question.

No, it isnt rude. However, maybe you can just tell them when and where you remember them from and that may jog their memory.
