A homily is a reflection on the scripture reading for the day. It is designed to make the passages real in ordinary lives. The pastor does not get to choose the passages, they cycle so the entire bible is read over a period of time.

A sermon uses scriptural passages to explain an idea. The role of scripture is reversed. It is used to support an idea. So, for example, if you wished to do a sermon on adultery, you would choose passages that cover the idea and explain why God considers it a sin.

A sermon is designed to teach to a specific point. A homily is a reflection upon the passages designated for the day. A homily doesn't really have a point unless the particular reading had a point.

Christianity is religion and Catholic,Protestants are it's sects.Catholic beliefs do not allow certain men to have a wife because they are leaders in the Church. However in the Bible we read Christian leaders were married, such as the Apostle Peter (Matthew 8:14, Mark 1:30, Luke 4:38) Paul who was a Christian leader and wrote most of the New Testament also allowed marriage (1 Corinthians 9:5). The Bible even makes it clear that it is wrong to forbid marriage (1 Timothy 4:3).On the other hand protestants allow everyone to get married

There is no difference really.

But the Protestant ministers generally get to choose topics, then based on that topic, choose which passages to read. The Catholic Priests must speak related to what the scheduled Bible reading for that service was. They generally do one Gospel reading, and one other reading, either Old Testament or from the Epistles or Revelations, though sometimes they do two additional readings, and the priest can quote as much as he wants in the homily.

I've heard both terms used to describe the exact same event. One person calls it a sermon and the other calls it a homily.

If there is a technical difference between the two, it isn't reflected by their general public use.

They are about the same. An explanation of the Scriptures and how we can apply them to our lives.

The biggest difference is that every Catholic Church in the world is studying the same scriptures each Sunday and a Catholic homily averages only about ten minutes long.

With love in Christ.

A homily is a priest's reflection on the Gospel reading, which takes place immediately after the reading. A sermon is a minister's explanation of a bible reading, also after the reading. I think they're the same!
