The saying that action speaks louder than words are very suitable for dogs..they are excellent body language reader! Actually the words per se that coming out from our mouth doesnt understand by the dogs, thats why in their training we have to be constant otherwise it would be very difficult for them to pick up the idea, like the when will u say it in deep voice or high pitch voice accompanied by gestures, why do u think ignoring them when they commit mistakes work?..like for instance, when ur dog breaks something in ur house and ur yelling or telling something on him, the dog didnt understand the words ur saying..BUT what ur dog will notice is ur sudden change of moods. Like ur nice to him but when he does destroying something u start ignoring him,and or whatever u do to him as punishment..thats what give him an idea that what she does is wrong and u dont like it, therefore ur dog will not do it again. not because she understand what u said to him,but what he doesnt want is what u are showing to him..its not the cause that he understands, its the effect or the result produced by the cause! I used to ask questions to veterinarians, and i do some net surfing regarding dogs behavior too.Try it sometime and ull get to know more about ur dogs behavior.

I believe that to a certain degree, dogs do understand. They are masters at reading body language since this is how they communicate with another dog. So they can read the body language of people they know too. Subtle things like tensing of the body when the owner comes home and sees that the couch has been chewed.
As a dog trainer, I find that dogs actually know more words than we think they do. I have been training for 10 years, currently have 9 dogs of my own, and used to run a rescue organization. Dogs are incredibly intuitive.

Dogs can learn to have a surprisingly large vocabulary - I've found that the more you talk to a dog, the more words they can pick out of what you say. Dogs can also read a person's body language much better than most people do. They don't think like people do, obviously, but can sense feelings or illness in their people.

Dogs aren't human, and can only understand the world from the point of view of a dog. We can both feel pain, we both have young and care for them so we have a lot in common. But they can't understand the complexities of human relationships, or know about concepts like money.
Dogs can think in symbols, both verbal and visual. As your wedding ring is a symbol for you, so an object can become a symbol for a dog. But their symbolic thinking is simple, A=B.
They can see and smell when we're upset, ill or pregnant, and can be sympathetic.
But they can't understand every word we say.

Yes dogs do understand what and how you say things we have a golden retriever named cassie and when one of us ill she instinctively knows that we need comfort and company and takes up a station beside the bed,and only leaves her post to go to the toilet or to eat. She has 26 soft toys which she loves to carry around without damaging and knows each one by name at night we tell her to tidy up and she collects her toys 1 at a time and puts them back in her toybox. When its cold i have a hot water bottle with a cover of a lion.i ask her to go upstairs and get lennie from the bed which she does and brings it down for me to fill. I have no doubt that intelligent dogs understand every word you say and by instinct and sensitivety knows your mood perfectly

Yes, they are very capable and do know what their owners are saying. Sometimes, they're too smart. They know what you need, and they most certainly can sense how you are feeling. About the want part, I don't agree with that, but I could be wrong.

Dogs understand a lot and sometimes I think they can read their masters mind. They know how to give love.
