Wow, this is a hard one. If it were a Goodwill store, I would give it to the clerk (who would probably pocket it) because I couldn't stand the guilt. But since the purse is $49, this is probably a "better" vintage store. I would probably pocket the $20 and leave the store. (I'm not buying a $49 old purse). The chances of the money going to the original owner are probably nil, so that is how I would live with myself. Great, now I feel guilty and I didn't even do it. So now, if I find money I will pocket it if I can't find the owner (not much chance of that) but give it to the church on Sunday.

B is the only sensible, legal, ethical answer

A: taking something that doesn't belong to you is THEFT. Whatever is inside a store belongs to the store. Whatever is outside a store that you didn't pay for still belongs to the store and you are a thief

C: The money doesn't belong to the clerk either, it belongs to the purse, which belongs to the store.

D: If you bought the purse in good faith, why would you need to clear your conscience?

B: You put the purse in the cart. It goes through the cashier. If the cashier sees/doesn't see the money, the next step is within their power. I don't know about vintage stores, but 99% of the stores I go to, the cashier opens all items anyway...

Buy the purse and keep the 20. Whatever is in the purse at point of purchase belongs to the buyer. In a case like this, there is no reason to feel guilt. The owner of the store is going to make the same profit regardless.

Since I'm a big believer in karma, I would try to make sure the money got returned to the original owner of the purse or at least take it to the clerk. I've actually been in a situation kind of like this before, I tried to give the money back but no one claimed it so I got to keep it :-)

I would b) buy the purse and keep the gift inside. Because i mean taking the money inside and just leaving would feel alot like stealing, but buying the gift and keeping the money is like a reward with buying the purse!

Choice B, I figure the clerk didn't know about the cash and they would've stuck in their pocket.(probably wasn't their purse in the first place) $50 is a hefty price for anything(don't take money for granted) the $20 discount is reasonable business. If I ran a store and someone tried to give some cash back to me this would be my reaction:
"What the hell are you doing? I'm already gouging the prices and you want to give me more? Keep it kid and don't do that agian!!!"

B. And then I'd research the $20. If the purse is vintage, then there is a good chance the bill is a "Silver Certificate" as opposed to Federal Reserve Note. It could be worth more than face value.

A Pocket it for sure, its not like the owner of the purse is going to hunt it down, and why give it to the clerk? You know she is just gonna pocket it anyways.

buy the purse, keep the cash. Think if of it as paying for part of the purse. Especially good if you like the purse.

buy the purse and hope the cashier doesn't find it. haha. It's like finding an extra can of soda in the box - not your fault. They should have checked the bag before they put it on the floor anyway.
